Spartacus 1960 Final Battle SFX/fire

Spartacus is a great movie ..good dialogue ....great backdrop scenery/etc....I think it has more scenes with masses of people on the move, than the Ten Commandments---the screen view appears wider--panoramic
..here is the awesome battle scene with cylinders of fire rolling over people and people falling into them ...well choreographed/etc ...how did they do it??

You know that scene at the end with all the bodies crucified along the Appian Way? I like to imagine it's democrats along Highway 40.
