As astronauts are sent to space they are exposed to ionizing radiation and the side effects of it. In LEO astronauts are exposed to less cosmic rays, however as they cross the Van Allen Belt they are exposed to large amounts of cosmic radiation LEO astronauts are exposed to cosmic rays, a type of ionizing radiation made of particles from outer space, the amount of radiation absorbed by astronauts is 50- 2,000 mSv during a 6 month trip.
For comparison on Earth people are exposed to approximately 3.11 mSv a year from natural sources.
