I recall being in the butts on Parris Island during live fire qualification. We would pull the target down and paste over the holes and signal with a marker where the shot went. We had an even stranger exercise in infantry training where we climbed into something that looked like a manhole and held up a target on a stick while they fired live rounds from a BAR overhead. Tracer rounds sometimes dropped into the hole.
