Little Rylan Weidman (10 months old) lost his life this week, in a house fire in Hillsborough county, Florida. What caused the fire is not known, but one thing is for sure >> in all buildings (residences, workplaces, bars, etc) smoking is a huge risk. Smoking in apartments is a ridiculously selfish act on the part of the smoker, which endangers all residents of that apartment house.
I’m going to go on record to say that smoking indoors (even in private homes), should be outlawed. No open flame or lit cigarette, or any smoking device, should ever be indoors, anywhere, anytime.
Some smokers may rebel at this. They may see engaging in smoking as their right, which government has no right to infringe upon. I see Rylan Weidman’s right to be alive and safe, as outweighing the right of the person engaging in a dangerous, unhealthy, filthy, and downright stupid activity.
Fireplaces ? They provided warmth for 17th, 18th and 19th century cabins of pioneers and folks living out on the prairies of the old west. Nowadays, they are not necessary, except for rare cases of people living in wilderness areas off the electrical grid. You want a fireplace, just for the cozy ambience of it ? Get a safe one – that closely mimics a fire, using electricity, and can provide heat, as well.
