European Commission indicates a change of tack on an issue that has Central and Eastern European countries seeing red.

20 July 2017
Slovakia’s prime minister is threatening to impose restrictions on EU food products if the European Commission fails to tackle double standards in food quality, the BBC reports.

Speaking at a press conference in Bratislava yesterday, Robert Fico laid out packages of frozen fish fingers, fabric softener, and coffee – just three of many brand-name products Slovakia and other Central European countries say are inferior to those with identical packaging sold in Western Europe.

Saying "We have to defend ourselves, we can't accept this," Fico added that he might try to gather the 1 million signatures required to propose new EU legislation through the European Citizens’ Initiative process.

Recent studies in Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic have bolstered the claim that multinational companies’ food products sold there contain ingredients which are inferior to those in such countries as Germany and Austria.

Tests in Bulgaria now show that some products there are not identical to the German and Austrian versions, Agriculture Minister Rumen Porozhanov said last month, according to EuroNews.
