Some are saying Trump's slashing of the federal workforce will affect Virginia's governor's race this fall. But I think long term it will turn Virginia red. The reason is population. NOVA is an expensive area and incompetent folks who no longer have government jobs will have to move away. Very few government workers are voting Republican anyway, so any loss of population will hurt Democrats. Besides that, the majority of Virginians who are not laid off government workers will welcome the efficiency and eliminated waste the Trump administration will bring.

Brian Kirwin, a Virginia political consultant with more than 20 years of experience, claimed that voters likely support getting rid of government waste.
"I don't think Virginians think that the federal government should be a bloated, inefficient, expensive job program with a $30 plus trillion dollar deficit," Kirwin said. "I think a more efficient government and a lower debt and a lower deficit would be what Virginians want."

We have shown that the pay off scheme isn't really increasing the amount people leaving as they have stated only 40,000 have applied...
About 100,000 people leave the Federal Government per year.

I will say that the way that they are cutting employees is not how any normal company does it... First you go to your business and with a scalp you find the work which is redundant and then get them to reapply and keep the best...

DOGE seems to have set up a system where there best employees who have easy progression to the Private sector are going to get free money... There is no analysis is there job essential? is the work they doing going to automate something?
And yes this is what he did in Twitter and the platform has been unstable and hemorrhaging customers since...

BTW, other countries have tried to this thing before and ended up hiring the same workers back on contract on a bumped up rate (approx 50%)... Had a friend who was given a big package to leave a Electricity Network, asked the guy how did that go, he said they gave him 250k and they asked him to come back in the following Monday, he was complaining that he didn't even get a holiday... Truns out that no one wrote down a wiring plan, ever, it was all in your man's head... This is very common...

I agree with this. As a resident of NoVa, I am surrounded by government “workers” who have enjoyed, and laughed about, their part-time work requirements for years. Most I know are GS14 step 10 or GS15 - earning $180,000 a year.

The ones near retirement with an $80,000 to $100,000 pension awaiting, along with a paid-off house, may stay. But those college grads in mid-career will find it hard to get a job paying as much as their government gig, AND they will be expected to work full days.

The ones who will run out of the area in droves will be the mediocre high school grads with titles like “administrator,” getting paid $80,000 a year. They will be unable to find a job paying even 75% that in the real world given their bad work habits - and private employers know that.

The uneducated support staff making up the government, with 2 people for every job, will flee the area, as will many of the mid-level professionals. They just won’t be able to get comparable pay and benefits in private, and won’t be able to pay for their expensive homes or rent.

its more like a 150,000 about only half that are retirees.....back in the 90's the PO offered early retirements to those close to retirement....but they were just trying to get rid of those of us who were still under Civil Service retirement....

Harry,

We wer told this last week

That is where I got the 40,000... Honestly if it was 150,000 I would probably consider that a bit small too.. For the 100,000 leaving with in the year it is almost a no brainer especially if you are as good as set up for retirement... Generally Gov Jobs are well set up to pay into a pension.

50,000 from 2.3million, with a half year pay off... If you started working in the last two years and don't really like the job, you just banked... Consider an IT grad working in the Government, just got paid and will have a job in a few months..

Anyway, it is incredibly stupid way to loose employees... It shows a clear lack of understanding how organisations work, you keep your best and loose your worst... I was working for the last 3 years for an auto manufacture and they idolised Tesla and how they operated...
I pointed out to them that Tesla grew selling into the Mid Level EV market with no competition... They changed the way they sold cars due to that lack of competition. Now that space is getting crowed especially from the Chinese, see how survives when he has to fight for every sale.
Musk is loosing his leadership team in Tesla, they are all quitting... Tesla sales in Europe are in free fall.. Tesla Marketing Dept must be gutted, your main brand icon is giving NAZI salutes and insulting the main customer base of EV cars (i.e. Liberals, Urbanites, Green)...

As rich as Musk is, I struggle to see how he is a great business man... I think he has a great eye to see a gap in a market and exploit it well, he is pretty fearless when he goes for it... But look at Twitter/X and you see a lot of impluse, getting involved with Trump.... They seem to be driven by inflated ego...

I pulled my quote from the link which bolsters my claim in the OP, but also pointed out where the link was wrong in places.
