Considering the fact that I don't believe that everybody is mentally stable enough to own a gun I'm really starting to believe that this should be the case. What do you guys think! Agree or disagree?

Certain mental disorders should never be able to own a gun. Psychosis anti social personality and PTSD with a history of acting violently

So then your answer would be yes not no.

There are already conditions, which makes it a DeFacto privilege, just like your driver's license.

Then why are there so many shootings committed by the mentally ill? Maybe stronger background checks then?

There would be a lot of privileged people in the west and south sides of Chicago. Who woulda thunk?

We didn't know they were before they started shooting although some gave some pretty strong signals (which were ignored).

You are basically right, CK, not everyone is stable enough to own a gun. Problem is that unstable people should know that of themselves and opt out of owning one of their own accord:

THE FATAL FLAW in your argument is that if it is made a privilege instead of a right, who does that put in charge of your owning a gun but the government--- the very people with the most to lose and the greatest interest in your not having a gun, which is why it was made a right and not a privilege in the first place!

That is like putting the Fox in charge of the chicken coup.

Just look at the first thing the government does when put in charge of anything (like healthcare):
  • Do they put patient health ahead first?
  • Nope, they just cut the benefits to save money for themselves.

People who bear arms should also do a much better job of concealing their weapons so the wrong person doesn't get their hands on them. Something most definitely has to be done though.

Yeah but what about felons? They lost their right to own a gun too, but of course I realize that that doesn't mean that they still won't get their hands on one. After all, it hasn't stopped illegal drugs from coming into our country either.

what makes you think they pass background checks when they get a firearm?

True

tell ya what, you dont like it? start a movement to get an amendment to change the Constitution. That is the ONLY way you get to change it.

It was just an opinion anyways and it only applies to the mentally ill.

After committing a felony, you lose your right to own a gun. Doing so is yet another felony. But a convicted felon wantonly committing another felon likely isn't concerned about lawful social behavior and no law will make any restriction to their lifestyle.

who makes that decision?

Obama tried that, and had people at the IRS naming 'mental defectives' because they couldn't fill out their own tax paperwork
