Explanation in english what slava is and how sveti nikola is celebrated
What is the Serbian Slava?
Slava is one of the most important Serbian Orthodox traditions. It is a family patron saint celebration, unique to Serbs. Instead of celebrating a personal saint like a name day, Slava is inherited through the male family line and honors the saint who is believed to protect the household. Each family has one main saint, and that day becomes a yearly celebration of family unity, faith, and ancestry.
It combines Orthodox Christian tradition with old pre-Christian customs of ancestor veneration, which is why it feels both spiritual and deeply cultural at the same time.
On the day of Slava, families gather, pray, attend church, and welcome guests with food, drink, and warm hospitality. Even those not very religious usually respect and celebrate Slava, as it represents identity, continuity, and heritage.
Key symbolic items are usually present:
Slavski kolač (slava bread) – decorated bread symbolizing Christ.
Kolјivo/žito (wheat boiled with sugar and nuts) – symbol of eternal life and remembrance of ancestors.
Slava candle – lit in honor of the saint.
Red wine – symbolizing Christ's blood.
Incense/prayer – blessing of the house.
Slava of Sveti Nikola (St. Nicholas)
Sveti Nikola is one of the most common and beloved Serbian patron saints. His Slava is celebrated twice a year, depending on whether a family honors his winter or spring feast:
19th December (6th December by Julian calendar) — Sveti Nikola Zimnji (Winter St. Nicholas) – the most celebrated Slava in Serbia.
22nd May (9th May by Julian calendar) — Letnji Sveti Nikola (Summer St. Nicholas)
Most families celebrate the winter one, which is during fasting time, so traditional meals are posna (fasting food, no meat or dairy).
Typical traditions for Sveti Nikola Slava:
The Slava candle is lit in the morning.
The family attends liturgy in church or invites a priest to bless the home.
The Slavski kolač is cut and rotated with wine, often by the head of the household and the priest.
Žito/koljivo is prepared the evening before.
The feast is fasting-style: fish, beans, salads, bread, ajvar, sarma with fish or mushrooms, posna cakes, wine, rakija.
Guests arrive throughout the day to eat, drink, and wish Srećna Slava!
Some families sing traditional songs or play folk music later in the evening.
It's a moment to gather family, remember ancestors, and celebrate heritage.
In short:
Slava = A family saint day, symbol of roots, unity, and tradition.
Sveti Nikola Slava = Fasting celebration with fish and posna meals, one of the most widespread Slavas in Serbia.
Greeting someone on this day: „Srećna Slava domaćine!“ / “Happy Slava to you and your family!”
