During China's Cultural Revolution, rabid mobs of 'woke' Red Guard would break into the homes of those deemed a threat to mao's ideas of the 'pure' and 'correct' society. Dragged out into the streets along with all their belongings, those 'dangerous subversives' would often be bound and decorated with signs identifying their 'sins.' Over the course of hours these 'deplorables' would be forced to proclaim the error of their ways while being punched, kicked, and pelted with rotten produce. They were to keep their heads down and say nothing but what was in keeping with passages from The Little Red Book and begging forgiveness.
