The concept of race fits in to some degree with the traditional scientific study of taxonomy which classifies all plants and animals according to certain characteristics. We are of the primate family, which all share certain traits. We are in the genus Homo which share more specific traits and in species sapiens which share quite specific traits and form a stable breeding population.
When discussing plants and animals, the dictates of binomial nomenclature used in taxonomy often divide creatures even further to the level of sub species which represents a stable localized population within a species that shares a slight trait different than other members of the species -- white flowers when the species usually has yellow, for instance -- but is not a distinct species, merely a slight variation.
With Humans, what we refer to as Asian, White or Black might be considered subspecies (and no, sub does not mean subordinate, here) but that does not mean much beyond the acknowledgement of certain phenotypical traits. Imbuing these phenotypical traits with OTHER qualities is based upon cultural determinations, not scientific.
