Actually, although I really do like the reporters at Rebel News, I do believe that the name "Sankofa Square" is kind of catchy and sets up Hollywood North for some movies, and potential reality films and even potential semi-reality science fiction films, that could cause the Canadian film industry to boom.

Is it possible that the Mayor of Toronto hasn't really clued to all the death and bloodshed that we Canadian emigrants from Europe had to go through to make Canada a place where there used to be a high level of freedom of though and even a decent level of economic freedom?

Sankofa Square in Toronto is named after the Akan term Sankofa, which translates to "go back and get it," symbolizing the need to reflect on the past to build a better future. The name was chosen to replace Yonge-Dundas Square, addressing colonial legacies and promoting inclusivity by focusing on learning from history, including anti-Black racism and its impact.
Sankofa Square +2
Key Details About the Name Change:
  • Significance of "Sankofa":Originating from the Twi language of Ghana, it embodies the concept of "reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past, which enables us to move forward together". It isOften depicted by a bird with its head turned backward, grabbing an egg from its back
    .
    • Replacing Yonge-Dundas Square: The name change from Yonge-Dundas Square took place following concerns that Henry Dundas, whom the square was named after, played a key role in delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in the 18th century.
    • Community and Heritage: The renaming process was led by the City of Toronto’s Recognition Review Community Advisory Committee, which included Black and Indigenous leaders, reflecting a commitment to reconciliation and addressing historic inequities.
    • Context: The decision reflects Toronto's efforts to reconsider the commemoration of individuals tied to the slave trade and colonial harm, aiming for a more equitable public space
Here is my off the cuff reaction to this news story......
It impresses me that perhaps legally attempting to stop Mr. Daniel Tate
from selling a T-shift seems to be a touch extreme.

Lincoln Jay, Rebel News:
[td]Dear Dennis,
Toronto City Hall has officially decided that selling a T-shirt celebrating the city's history must be met with legal threats. And the reason why is so petty.
A concerned citizen, Daniel Tate, started selling T-shirts featuring the old Yonge-Dundas Square logo (now Sankofa Square).
All net proceeds go to the Daily Bread Food Bank, helping fight food insecurity across the city. So what's the issue?
Mayor Olivia Chow and City Council dumped the old name in favour of something new, woke, and progressive — and now seem determined to erase the past entirely. They sent Daniel a full-blown cease-and-desist letter over the T-shirt.
Is this the punishment you get for honouring history?
