Tremendous story about John Wayne as a sergeant in the USMC and the Duke is unfortunately killed.

Wayne is without a doubt the greatest actor of the 20th Century, and this was his greatest role.

Longest Day.

had EVERYONE in it.

(Poor Red Buttons and his problem with hearing bells)

I love the idea of a film with a large cast of superstars, just like the Greatest Story Ever Told.

.

I was just now surprised to learn that Ira Hayes was played by himself!

Imagine that!

.

thats informative, especially since Ira Hayes wasn't in the European theater, he was in the Pacific he's not listed on IMDB as being in the movie, under either the trivia section for the movie, nor on his own IMDB page.

(might want to recheck your source)

Iwo Jima was in the Pacific last time I checked.

There are a lot of good war movies for various reasons. Some dramatic, some funny. I can't say for sure I have a single favorite.

I don't think Marion ever actually served in any armed force.

Well, I like Wayne in some of his stuff but not everything. He was a very popular, iconic guy.

No matter his role he was always "John Wayne". Although that's true of most 'leading men'.

John Wayne fought in every war, but the real ones. Fact!

The Duke was born in 1907, he was in his mid-30's with a number of dependents relying on his income when the draft was instituted for WW2.

Not really a prime choice to get conscripted into the army during the only war that he might have seen action in.

Jimmy Stewart was a bomber pilot in the ETO.

Letters from Iwo Jima was a fabulously great film. Its from the Japanese perspective, but you really get to see the intricate hell the IJA created for the Marines there.

One really good war movie a lot of people have never seen or know about.

"When Trumpets Fade". (can be seen on YouTube)

The movie takes place during the brutal Battle of the Hurtgen Forest.
The actual battle has been overlooked even by historians.
Because it was fought 3 days before the famous Battle of the Bulge.
