The reason for the light amount of years for "murder" in the U.S., is because murder in the U.S., is put into categories of seriousness, looking into the causes. You have: Involuntary manslaughter, voluntary manslaughter, 2nd degree murder and 1st degree murder. As most so-called murders fall into the first two categories, the sentences tend to be lighter (drunk driving accidents, careless/negligent behavior that results in death, et cetera). Thus, while someone died as the result of some stupid action(s), the sentence given is to teach a lesson, as well as punish, not put them away for the rest of their lives.
Regardless of the categories, the punishment must fit the crime. Due to the unrighteous judges being in a multitude these days, it seems that the reading of the laws in respect to the crimes are being manipulated by these judges.
A good example of a justified light sentence, my nephew. He and his wife were asleep in their bed and heard a noise downstairs, he took his pistol to investigate and sure enough, two people had broken in. He could see their dark shapes in the living room and fired, killing one. It turned out to be two teens with the intent on burglarizing the home. They were unarmed.
What in the hell does this have to do with America?
