Rory McIlroy had a new driver for the PGA Championship after it was reportedly ruled his previous club was non-conofirming when tested before practice at Quail Hollow earlier in the week

The problem with Rory's driver, whatever it is, seems far too esoteric for casual golf fans to understand. Maybe the face has "degraded" a bit and now gets him an extra two yards off the tee. It is as close to meaningless as possible.

But the fact is that when you hit the ball that far, it becomes extremely difficult to hit into the fairway. When they allow the rough to grow very high (as they do in Majors), that means you pay a price for that length. This is what makes watching him interesting. He is often forced to hit approach shots from lies (high grass) that would drive a common golfer to distraction.

Parenthetically, this week's tournament is setting up to be a ratings disappointment. If the top ten golfers on Sunday are people that no casual fans have ever heard of, few people will be watching on Sunday afternoon.

It's kind of like when NASCAR says a car was out of conformance because some spoiler is off by 2 degrees, most people don't know what its about, Rory can still smash the ball father than anyone, but all the great ones look for more, Bonds, Brady, Lance Armstrong, they all are addicted to athletic success and sometimes cheat to stay on top.

Yeah, unlike Tiger Woods, who had numerous fans help him out over the years, Rory appears to have done it the old-fashioned way.
