Beloved, iconic, Chicago Cubs HoF 2nd baseman Ryne "Ryno" Sandberg has died at the age of 65.

Damn. Even though I'm a Cards fan and am supposed to hate the Cubs, I grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and Ryno was a household name in the 1980s.

RIP Ryno.

I grew up watching the Cubs and White Sox on WGN, the Atlanta Braves on WTBS, and the Texas Rangers on KTVT. Watched the STL Cardinals (my team) whenever they'd play the Braves or Cubs.

Mostly watched WGN and Sandberg was a household name back then. Steve Stone and Harry Caray talkin about 'Ryno'.

Those were the days.

Yeah, in the late 80s.he was a player all fans knew. I recall he was a double and triple specialist in particular, though he hit alot of HRs for a 2nd baseman at that time

He was the National League MVP in 1984, batting .314 with 19 homers, 84 RBIs, 32 steals, 19 triples and 114 runs scored. Chicago won the NL East and Sandberg hit .368 (7-for-19) in the playoffs, but the Cubs were eliminated by the San Diego Padres after winning the first two games of the NL Championship Series at Wrigley Field.

That was the Cub's year, and they were up 2-0 on the Padres. While they would have lost to a stacked Detroit Tigers team, they should have at least gotten to the World Series in 84, I remember it well, surrounded by Cubs fans.

I have a very distinct memory of Sandberg near setting a record at 1 time w/ 1 "Triple" short of being 20/20; Doubles/ Triples! Got stuck on 19 triples! I was lucky enuf to live in Chgo. in those "Say Hey" days of the 80's w/ The Cubs making the playoffs in '84 & '89! Of course they blew it & never won a series even up 2-0 vs San Diego in '84 in the NLCS! Lived thru 2003 & the dropped foul ball by a fan! I'm shocked the CUBS actually, finally won a World Series in 2016! Too bad I'm more a White Sox Fan! :auiqs.jpg: :dunno::stir::p

Sandberg was my second favorite player on the Cubs in the 80's. Second only to Andre Dawson. RIP Mr. Sandberg.

The only player I know that can be an MVP on a team in last place! The HAWK in '87! The Cubs blew a lead in the NLCS 2-0 vs San Diego back in 1984! They were too busy trying to set up the pitching in The World Series! They should have thown Sutcliff back out there in Game 4 IIRC! They were desperate in Game 5 & the curse took over! :auiqs.jpg::dunno::stir::p:p

In hindsight, one of the worst trades Phillies ever made.
trading fiesty Larry Bowa and Prospect Sandberg for Iván de Jesús.
Ryne Sandberg was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and played in their minor league system before being traded to the Chicago Cubs.

WOW! How the **** does that happen?

he had prostate cancer.....

Yep, prostate cancer can be rough if not caught early. All cancers can, obviously, but it often doesn't give off early warning signs like, say, colorectal cancer. Early stage prostate cancer is often mistaken for aging prostate issues. I had a cousin and a neighbor who died of prostate cancer.

Yep. He was still loyal to the Phillies organization, even becoming their manager for a brief stint.
