And, of course, the urbanites want their unspoiled rural retirement places. Let's make it clear, rural areas could survive without urban centers a lot longer than urban centers could survive without rural ones, and in fact will do so when the inevitable economic crash happens.
Not when we have a global economy.

And rely on the world for food
The United States imports about 15% of its food supply, but the percentage of imported food has been increasing in recent years:
2008–2022: The percentage of imported food and beverages increased from 12.4% to 17.3%.
Fruits and nuts: Nearly 60% of fruits and nuts consumed in the U.S. are imported.
Milled grains and oils: 57.4% of milled grains and oils consumed in the U.S. are imported.
Sweeteners: 45% of sweeteners consumed in the U.S. are imported.
Vegetables: 40.4% of vegetables consumed in the U.S. are imported.
Seafood: 70–85% of seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported.
