They have been around for a while for sure. In days long past if I remember correctly they were referred to as "spirts of the air" by folks that witnessed them.

People dont refer to solid, flying objects as "spirits". If old timey people saw a UFO flying around, they wouldnt call it a spirit. Spirits are a very specific thing. This idea that words had loosey goosey meanings in the past is incorrect.
