Most people are unfamiliar with the origins of Jews in Hollywood.
At the turn of the century, many immigrant Jews were actors, playwrights, and stage directors. Jew made up a large part of turn of the century Vaudeville, Broadway, and a thriving Yiddish theater establishment.
Jews were among the first to embrace the new technology of motion pictures. Jewish entrepreneurs made substantial investments in setting up new movie studios in Los Angeles, where land for back lots and sound stages was going cheap.

If I had to choose mobs, I would much rather live under the control of Jewish mobs than under today's mobs.

Vegas was a great place according to my parents and grandparents; good food, great shows, and casino owners who knew how to apply the personal touch. They ran the best night clubs, too.
the early Hollywood studio owners were mostly good at what they did, too; Harry Cohn and Louis B. Mayer were the only major assholes, maybe Jack Warner. Adolph Zukor went bankrupt in his early career, over that fake railroad car thing that had movie screens around it ot make it look like you were traveling or something, really cheesy stuff but a big draw at the time, but was short and crashed; he refused to file bankruptcy and hide behind the law and worked day and night to pay off every dime he owed.
Marcus Lowe had a good eye for theater talent, and of course Carl Laemmile was very successful and also honest, but wasn't good at firing people and had all those relatives on his payroll. Fox was an asshole, too, made himself a family dictator and nutjob. Others came along later, like those two theater chain owners in Chicago, B&B, many others who kept building the business. Sam Goldwyn was an independent, worked best alone and made some great movies. I liked the early Selznicks a lot, too. Together the invented the whole business, from top to bottom. I've studied the Nickelodeon and early business side fairly in depth, and it is pretty fascinating; if you owned one in 1904 through 1910 you could hardly lose money, and in fact were probably minting nickles and dimes. Unfortunately, most of the movies themselves were pretty much crap, with a few exceptions, like Chaplin's and a few others. Didn't change much even by the first decade of sound. Pantomime is not very 'artistic'.

lol I would disagree; Lansky and the other 'Brains' were all sociopaths like the rest of them. They just got older, is all. Murder Inc. was nearly all Jewish, and Lansky's best friend was psycho killer Benny Siegel.

I don't know what to make of this thread. We've got mobsters in ethnic gangs, the theater/ motion-picture industry, and "sexual deviance." Oh, brother! At least remember that the motion-picture industry had its start in Fort Lee, New Jersey, on the Hudson Palisades. When I was 8, I watched from the roof of my aunt's apartment building in Fort Lee as an early movie studio burned; a sight that I will never forget. I can just think of all of that early nitro. My father, born January, 1917, whose parents and grandparents on both sides somehow fled NYC and bought properties in Hudson County, New Jersey, remembered the skinny Italian kid who sang at a roadhouse out 9W, who became Frank Sinatra. My G-G grandfather started his family in NYC right before the Civil War and he got his family out to New Jersey by 1870. Some years ago, I stood at his grave in a driving rainstorm and asked him, as his grand-daughter how he did it. He did not reply.

Prohibition gave organized crime a foothold in the U.S. By the time FDR's "great depression" rolled around, bank robbery became a cottage industry. By the 60's the once secret Cosa Nostra became a joke. More Italian mobsters were either in prison or relocated after testifying against each other, than were left on the street. By the 90's the Russians moved in and more politicians were stealing from the public than the Mafia.

There was a whole WitSec program tailor-made for the Italian crime families, mobsters, and big bosses, who rarely showed their face in public anyways, to go in business again under a new name after they were caught.

Organized crime got its start in the 19th century, with mass waves of immigrants with no connections to the dominant WASP culture set up shop in their own enclaves; their biggest patrons were politicians and newspaper, then they moved on to gambling and saloons. They were already there long before the Prohibition movement came along. The only problem with the 18th Amendment was it wasn't nearly tough enough and almost nothing was spent on enforcement, the head of the Treasury dept. being himself a distillery owner. The consumption of booze dropped considerably, from being a per capita consumption 3 times that of Europe to much more normal levels as the prices went beyond most working peoples' means to go on violent binges and reduced wife beating and family violence dramatically, which was the intent of Prohibition in the first place. It had so many loopholes and of course didn't outlaw drinking or making your own booze at home.
It never went away in many states, after the Federal law was repealed, due to desparation for tax revenues, not unpopularity, a couple dozen states kept dry or partially dry, just as many went dry before the Amendment; they did just fine, despite all the rubbish newspaper drunks kept spreading about it. It was the 1960's before consumption jumped back up to pre-Prohibition levels, and the carnage on the highways was a national scandal, with more casualties in an average year than the entire Viet Nam War was. All those 'responsible drunks' only existed in the imaginations of innernetz propagandists, and no where else. In the 19th century, most politicians stayed drunk all day long every day, as did military officers and most men. The booze hounds think it was a glorious time, when it was a weekly nightmare for many women and children as Hubby drank up the family food and rent budget and beat their families in drunken rages.
