While at the same time Ukraine makes claim of being able to win the battle for Mariupol.
Are US/Nato weapons about to arrive just in time?
Is Russia calling it off because they can't take Mariupol?

You're nuts. Mariupol is finished.

There are only about 2,000 remaining Ukrainian insurgents scattered throughout the devastated city of Mariupol.
So the Russian army decided it's not worth risking the lives of soldiers to clear them out, and instead has surrounded the city to starve them into surrender.

The Azovstal steel works looked almost post-apocalyptic *before*. I can't imagine a less appealing battlefield to go root out determined resistance, except maybe an active volcano or complete darkness. It reminds me either of the Tractor Works in Stalingrad, or the Sihang Warehouse in Beijing, for those of you familiar with your World War II. Just the worst.

It looked like this, before the bombing started.

Risking the lives of soldiers is the last thing Russia is worried about. They know it's impossible to route out every single soldier from every single building left standing in the city. Worse yet is that they would be attempting to do this with half starved 18 year old conscripts who don't even know why they're even in Ukraine to begin with.

May be Russia thought it was not necessary to send troops to the so called "catacombs" steel factory, which would result in heavy loses for all sides .....and all that was needed to be done was to seal off the steel factory, because there is not military gain by storming the factory.

We'll see what happens.... hope the Nazi Azov Ukrainians inside the steel plant will surrender :dunno:

They fear what would happen to them. But in the end they have no choice. Its surrender to death. Surrender might result in legal charges, though.

Let Russia military fight in other regions where they are needed.

Like I said .... there is no military gain storming the steel factory.

The Ukrainian Nazis inside should all surrender and go back to their families alive and in one piece. :dunno:

This is how the occupation of Mariupol began after the referendum on the independence of Donbass, at which the majority of the city's residents voted for self-determination and secession from Ukraine.
May, 2014.
