Humanity needs nasa to figure out ways to survive asteroids and other things that may very well wipe us out.

Science also shouldn't be about profit.

Nasa is the brains and they most certainly do create.

The private sector is good at only profiting. Good in some areas and bad in others.

ON this --- Kosh is much more correct.. NASA does program mgmt, administration, check writing and long-range planning. There's hardly a doer or engineer or scientist at KennedySCenter that isn't BOUGHT from private industry.. I worked at NASA HQ KSC for 10 months and left because I was lied to about the nature of the work there. All the real development and engineering and lab stuff was being done in Private Industry elsewhere.

THERE ARE the rare visionaries and bright sparks -- but they are totally drifting with the political whims of what they think the politicians are buying.. Too distracted to focus on the actual DEVELOPMENT of anything..

Right now -- the only folks SERIOUS about asteroid protection are raising PRIVATE MONEY to launch an asteroid recon sat to protect earth's blind spot behind the Sun..
