Those who haven't been inside usually pay little or no attention to stuff like this, We might see them and have absolutely no idea what they mean. I just wonder if they stigmatize the wearer and keep them from assimilating with society in general once they get out.

I was working an entry gate at work some years ago and signed in a guy with a teardrop on his face - which I always understood meant that if you had a rear drop ; you killed a police officer .

It can mean you have killed someone. Sometimes it is used to remember loved ones that have been killed. Other people probably think it is cool.
