Prime Minister Urged to Declare “Emergency” After U.S. Stops Funding Australian Universities

Dunno; I didn't get any. But I think we're forking out about $3B for Aukus and we're buying US military stuff; best there is!! We're pulling our weight, Bru!!

AI thingy:

Australia generally has a trade deficit with the United States, meaning the US exports more goods and services to Australia than Australia exports to the US, with the deficit usually around $30 billion annually.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Trade Deficit:
Australia typically runs a trade deficit with the US, meaning the value of goods and services imported from the US exceeds the value of goods and services exported to the US.

  • Recent Trends:
While Australia had a trade surplus with the US in 2023, it is expected to return to a trade deficit in the coming months.

  • 2023 Figures:
In 2023, Australia's goods and services exports to the United States were $33.6 billion, while its total imports from the United States were $65.1 billion.

  • Trade Surplus with China:
In 2023, Australia had a trade surplus with China of over $110 billion, which is significantly larger than the trade deficit with the US.

  • US Trade Surplus with Australia:
The US has a trade surplus with Australia, meaning they export more to Australia than they import from Australia.

  • 2021 Trade Data
In 2021, the U.S. exports to Australia were $26.4 billion, a 13.1% ($3.1 billion) increase from 2020; U.S. imports from Australia were $12.5 billion, a 13.6% ($2.0 billion) decrease; and the trade surplus with Australia was $14.0 billion, a 56.0% ($5.0 billion) increase

So they are importing things from us because we are finding their colleges? Or is it cause they need things from us?

Needs and wants along with economic advantages; you know. Capitalism/Free market where the yanks seem to like out stuff too. Just not as much/often as we like theirs.

So nothing to do with the fact we are having to subsidize their colleges. Good we can save that money and spend it on Americans

"Prime Minister Urged to Declare “Emergency” After U.S. Stops Funding Australian Universities

March 22, 2025 | Sundance |

If you find yourself wondering, wait, what, why are we funding Australian universities? You are likely not alone.

Apparently, the U.S. government has been sending $6oo million/yr to universities in Australia to subsidize various college research programs. The Trump administration has told Australia the funding will likely end.

The Australian university system is in a state of panic, telling their government to declare a “state of emergency”.

One particular quote from within the Sky News article below seemingly encapsulates the mindset of the situation in the land down under:"

We are broke. The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of Mankind. Why are we funding Australian universities?
Why are we paying for virus research in Communist China?
I find this excerpt from the OP article link rather enlightening;

“The federal government must push back on the Trump administration’s blatant foreign interference in our independent research in the strongest possible terms,” NTEU president Alison Barnes said. (Full Article)

Wouldn't funding their research with U$A dollar$ be "interference" and taking away our money be 'no longer "blatant foreign" interfering' ???
Perhaps this is classic example of 'double speak' trademark of looney tunes Left wingnuts.;)

It's all the same ugly fascist actions being taken by America. The attempts with tariffs are at the root of all the hate and evil.
Opposition to the USA focusing on our own needs and priorities, rather than wasting our money on foreign nation's interests is the root of "all" hate and evil.

Carry your own 'freight'/rucksack, stop expecting the USA = American taxpayers to fund what you all are too lazy to fund yourselves.

USA/American will no longer go broke being the World's ATM.

Pay your own bills!

I went through Uni here in Oz back in the 70s when tuition was FREE. So did two of my brothers. The system was pretty lean back then and damn good. Then the bureaucrats started the process of turning it into a money machine and frankly there are far too many bullshit courses that only go to pay loony lecturers. The STEM components are still excellent though and if the US is in partnerships with those then they're getting value for money; otherwise it's just money being pissed up against the wall. Years ago one of my brothers and his mate were in business together and would team with a research unit and commercialise their products. It wasn't common back then but is more so now. If an INVESTMENT then the US money is well spent; if just grants with DEI crap attached then keep your money US and let the locals come to their senses!!

Yes indeed; free to MY wallet. It was the amazing brainchild of an early desire by a leftist Government to make Tertiary Education available "to the poor"(early DEI?); all it did was act as a middle/upper class welfare cheque. Did it work? Nope! After years of it the Gov eventually pulled the plug on it because it didn't change the mix at all. (The old Scholarship system worked better quite frankly).
But as the old saying goes; they may be stupid to offer it to me but I'm not so stupid as to knock it back. Or at least Dad wasn't.

And no; I'm not smug about it. I'm really quite grateful. But with hindsight it should never have been offered.

Trump is absolutely right!

"The Trump administration told Australian universities that the funding halt was to prioritize administration goals and avoid "DEI", woke gender ideology, and the green new deal."
Spot on!!!

Being a taxpayer, you likely are doing payback now.

Most of us associate them with Australia/New Zealand though.
FWIW, we have a Kiwi berry plant, fruit about the size of a thumb, with no fuzz. Still green inside and taste like larger kiwi. The bush/vine/small tree produces hundreds now.
