This is a great example of gatekeeping and non-news being reported as news.
It has a bunch of anonymous sources, a bunch of questions and concerns and you can see it basically trying to shoot a bunch of holes into the prospects of JD Vance while also trying to establish a bunch of early narratives to use against him.
It's what the media does and what most people tune out from because want news, not talking head pontificating.
However what is really great about this piece is all the "concerns" and "pontificating" make me like and want to vote for JD Vance even more.
Let's imagine you want to be thought of as a non-conventional, non-DC swamp creature. Does the word ENIGMA help or hurt that? To me it helps but to people with pretend intellect that word sounds a bit judgemental and worrisome. It just sold me more.
So to understand the gatekeeping here, this is piece is largely about the concerns of an anonymous foreign diplomat and "others". However can you imagine writing a piece where you call Vance and enigma and also an intellectual and then imagine people would think of that negatively. Especially when you talk about not being a "pragmatist" about "how the world works."
In other words, Vance doesn't understand that the role of the US is to be bled dry and pay for everyone and everything while doing nothing for itself. That "lack" of understanding just makes me want to vote for him more. The fact that unlike President Trump who explains this with all the finesse of a five year old, Vance can explain it with intellectual clout just makes him even better than Trump.
So if Trump was America First the problem is that Vance would be American First First First with an extra layer of being able to explain it with clear concise speech and high level language and concepts since he is an "intellectual". That sounds even more fantastic to me. Yes please.
As opposed to a guy who didn't serve due to bone spurs, the Iraq war veteran thinks we shouldn't be the police for the world and that the global order of multilateral bodies and free trade completely screwed over the U.S. working class to help countries like China and he declares fixing this is all about supporting his values rather than some sort of immutable traits like race or sex?
Holy ******* shit, can we just slap this into a commercial for Vance?!?!?! This sounds like the greatest endorsement ever but what is hilarious is that the folks speaking it as a "concern" are so at odds with it that they don't realize what they just stated.
Trump on steroids. Trump but better. Yes please!
No more policing the world? Double yes please.
He's Trump but well read, has more tools in the toolbox than just blasting people with insults, smart and well read but very determined to shift the U.S. toward his ideological goals which he can also think and articulate better than Trump.
I might need a moment alone to recover from this. This reads better than a romance novel.
This is what you call the "Yes but it's complicated and confounding...so you can't possible have agency since you can't understand it."
Except Vance has a law degree from Yale University and trying to pass him off as an intellectual light weight simply won't work.
It will work with Gavin Newsom though so that should be great.
You're too stupid to understand how "it's complicated" so now we will just say it's about feelings and he's mean.
The "enigma" isn't hard to understand. Latin American has sent vast numbers of people to the U.S. and the work and send remittances home that are a large percentage of the GDP of those countries. Basically a lot of these countries have started working as a follows.... we allow narco-terrorists to run the show. The middle class can't survive so they take their best and brightest and they run over to the United States. They also send their worst in terms of prisons, criminals and running drugs.
The gangs do what they do here and basically establish a beachfront for the future narco-state in the United States. The best among them work hard and send money home so their families can survive. We see this model play out in blue cities right now. There's the homeless, the serf class working incredibly hard and the elites and the criminal organizations living the good life.
These "diplomats" don't understand why JD wouldn't just do what the Democrats do and accept the graft and corruption to live the good life while just pretending to care about the poor and working class. It's an "enigma" about why he won't sell out like they all have done. Trump is the same only even worse because he's a billionaire who cares. It's a riddle they can't solve.
It's not a riddle that needs to be solved. It's the problems they have created that need to be confronted and fixed and articles like this just show you JD Vance will be Trump+. He will be younger, smarter, more articulate and have far less baggage while trying to do an even more strident and better job.
Yes please. Yes pretty please.
Thanks for alleviating all my "concern" there Politico. I can't wait to vote for JD Vance in 2028 and 2032.

He's an intellectual, so he's got all the positives and negatives of intellectuals," a European diplomat told me. "He's very smart and has a great deal of sort of abstract, theoretical depth, but he's probably not much of a pragmatist and doesn't really know a huge amount of the ins and outs of history and how the world works."
I granted the diplomat and others anonymity to be candid about someone they may have to work with for a long time.
Vance is only 41 and hasn't served long in public office. The diplomats and officials I spoke to know he must be careful right now not to stray far from the views of the looming, emotional Trump.

Vance's concerns about the world are rarely rooted in traditional foreign policy issues such as nuclear proliferation, conflict management or, to be more modern, climate change. Dig a little, and you realize that he sees foreign policy largely through the lens of U.S. domestic issues. Often, those issues revolve around economics, class and culture.
The takeaway for one former Latin American diplomat? "He doesn't really care about the interests of any other country."
So if Trump was America First the problem is that Vance would be American First First First with an extra layer of being able to explain it with clear concise speech and high level language and concepts since he is an "intellectual". That sounds even more fantastic to me. Yes please.
As my colleague Ian Ward and others have chronicled, Vance believes the post-World War II rules-based global order, with its multilateral bodies and free trade, was a project that over time screwed over the U.S. working class for the unrealized dream of turning China into a democracy. Vance, an Iraq war veteran, thinks many in the working class died in "forever wars" that did little to promote American interests. U.S. societal cohesion is further threatened by too much immigration, he says. Vance, who is married to an Indian-American woman, insists that such anxiety is not about race or ethnicity, but about values.

Nearly all of the dozen diplomats I spoke to said Vance is more of an ideologue than Trump. There's also a sense that a Vance-led America would be more isolationist than Trump's America. Some expect Vance to significantly downsize America's military footprint abroad.
Trump on steroids. Trump but better. Yes please!
"I don't think he's going to swing back to America being the principal donor of aid and security across the planet," a second European diplomat predicted.
No more policing the world? Double yes please.
Vance is dead-set on strengthening the U.S. economy, especially to help the working class and rebuild America's manufacturing base, said Sumantra Maitra, a senior fellow at the conservative Center for Renewing America and a Vance ally. He also is unlikely to let the U.S. be the world's policeman, Maitra told me.
But other leaders should not underestimate Vance's knowledge or characterize him as someone who cannot adapt to reality, Maitra said. "He is extremely well-read …When people say JD Vance is ideological, what they mean to say is he's a lot more determined about shifting the grand strategy of the U.S.
He's Trump but well read, has more tools in the toolbox than just blasting people with insults, smart and well read but very determined to shift the U.S. toward his ideological goals which he can also think and articulate better than Trump.

For instance: Yes, in recent decades, though not immediately after World War II, U.S. manufacturing has declined. But numerous factors beyond global institutions and China affected that trend,

What if people get hurt? It's hard to forget how Vance (and Trump) spread falsehoods about Haitian migrants in Ohio eating pets.
You're too stupid to understand how "it's complicated" so now we will just say it's about feelings and he's mean.
The diplomats having the hardest time understanding Vance are those from Latin America, Africa and Asia. That's because the vice president has paid limited attention to their regions. He has warned about China, though typically through an economic lens that shows his concern about U.S. workert's s.
"He's such an enigma to us," one Asian diplomat said.
