1. Strict, Short Term Limits
Those who claim that "elections are term limits" are being naive, intellectually dishonest, or both. The longer a politician is in office, the stronger their power & influence base becomes. Do we really think politicians would behave this way if they weren't worried about long-term influence, kissing ass, doing favors and getting re-elected?
2. Publicly-Funded Elections
Among other things, Trump's victory showed us that traditional advertising and campaign spending have been rendered (mercifully) irrelevant in the age of the internet and the proliferation of social media. Do we really think that politicians would behave this way if they didn't have to worry about and burn time on fundraising?
3. Balanced Budget Amendment
A BBA would force both parties to justify all taxing and spending initiatives. We could make it a "soft cap" (stealing a pro sports term) for emergencies such as wars, or we could simply have an added, temporary war tax (another idea I love) and/or sell war bonds. Do we really think that politicians would behave this way if they had to work within a budget and justify their ideas?
D.C. would (have to) change overnight.
Either we're serious or we're not. We can keep letting them do this, or we can put our foot down.
