It is not the position for the Dems, you are correct, but it is in general a left leaning position.
Except that's not true.
It's a more libertarian issue, that can fall into either the Left or Right quadrants of that ideological graph that most people on here are probably well familiar with.
So, for example, I would have never been a Republican in the 80s.
The influence of the Moral Majority over right wing politics would have been far too excessive at the time.
Now, today, do evangelicals and Christians still play an integral role in the Party? Of course they do. And rightfully so - those people are under attack by the woke authoritarian Left just as the rest of us are.
But Trump brought a lot of new people in. And even though he placed originalists on the Supreme Court (I can already anticipate your reflexive "gotchas" on this), no one (except perhaps the delusional Far Left) truly imagines that America could ever become a theological state as some ambitious folks on the Right envisioned during the 1980s.
The majority of GOP voters now back gay marriage, for one thing. That alone is antithetical to any such misled notion.
But, more importantly, the Christian Right is now in a coalition with the Libertarian Right and the working/middle class MAGA right that not only eviscerates any past notions of what "the Right" is in this new MAGA era - it has redefined the Democrats as a reactionary authoritarian entity that sees any departure from its own edicts as an existential threat.
Your children will learn about porn. (Mostly gay.)
The inner cities will burn. (And if you point that out, you're a racist.)
You will trust the "SCIENCE!" (tm), despite a surplus of counter-veiling evidence, otherwise YOU WANT PEOPLE TO DIE.
And if you don't support the war in Ukraine and the intelligence agencies (something that in the past would have been more of a Leftist position, broadly speaking)? You're a Putin puppet!
That is why censorship, character assassination, and mindless
ad hominem screed now define their movement.
The difference is no longer between Left and Right, it's between authoritarianism and freedom.
And while the Right's authoritarian wing still exists, its own innate nascency has dictated that its Libertarian wing is now ascendant. Trump happens to comport with both perfectly, which is why he is so successful, regardless of any bleating to the contrary by the corporate MSM.
These days, when you look at the most influential, savvy and (for lack of a better word) "cool" media - it's on the Right. Not the Left.
The Counter culture of the hippies in the 1960s (who now love the government, war, and censorship), has been supplanted by MAGA subversives in the subterranean press.
The Left, on the other hand, has been utterly subsumed by its own rampant authoritarianism to the point where it has to rely on the tactic of projection - hoping that the eccentric characteristics of Trump's personality are enough to eclipse what he actually did while in office.
All while hoping you don't notice every single move toward a one party socialistic state they have precipitated since the very moment he came on the scene.
