EUGENE, Ore. - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responding to Friday night's events at the federal building in downtown Eugene.
KEZI 9 News reached out to DHS for a comment on the situation at the federal building, which Eugene Police described as a protest that escalated into a riot. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughin responded with the following comment:
“On Friday night, 400 rioters stormed the ICE Eugene building destroying windows and did over $200,000 worth of damage to the facility," McLaughlin said. "Four rioters were arrested on charges to include assault on an officer, disorderly conduct, wearing a mask while committing a crime on federal property, and failure to comply with official signs...
“Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone who destroys federal property and assaults or obstructs law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Law and order will prevail.”
The damaged windows at the federal building are now boarded up, and the offices inside remain closed to the public.
