“The administration claims authority to sift through details of our private lives because the Patriot Act says that it can. I disagree. I authored the Patriot Act, and this is an abuse of that law.” – Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner

Patriot Act author slams FISC, NSA, and Obama’s defense of sweeping, unwarranted government surveillance! Take Action! Demand Congress to pass a Fourth Amendment Restoration Act!

American Conservative,

Obama and his Administration defended the National Security Agency’s widespread snooping on many millions of Americans saying that the Agency’s actions were justified under certain provisions of the Patriot Act.

However, the GOP lawmaker who authored the 2001 law claims that the Obama Administration’s excusing of the massive data sweep is “a bunch of bunk.”

Speaking this week on the Laura Ingraham show, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner – the author of the Patriot Act – claimed that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has gone far beyond the powers they were given under the post-9/11 law.

Regarding the Patriot Act’s Section 215, Rep. Sensenbrenner says that it “was originally drafted to prevent data mining,” not protect it.

In a recent op-ed railing against Obama’s Big Brother tactics, the Wisconsin Representative writes:

“ased on the scope of the released order, both the administration and the Fisa court are relying on an unbounded interpretation of the act that Congress never intended.

The released Fisa order requires daily productions of the details of every call that every American makes, as well as calls made by foreigners to or from the United States. Congress intended to allow the intelligence communities to access targeted information for specific investigations. How can every call that every American makes or receives be relevant to a specific investigation?

This is well beyond what the Patriot Act allows.”

The NSA and FBI’s ongoing surveillance of law-abiding Americans in the name of the Patriot Act and “fighting terrorism” is an outright attack on our freedom and our Fourth Amendment protections; it is also a perfect example of how government so easily grows beyond any power it given by Acts of Congress.

As Rep. Sensenbrenner says, “Our liberties are secure only so long as we are prepared to defend them.” This is exactly why we must take action right now and demand that the United States Congress passes a Fourth Amendment Restoration Act!

Take Action and blast faxes to Congress demanding they pass a Fourth Amendment Restoration Act! Legislators must create legislation that formally recognizes the absolute supremacy of the Fourth Amendment over all private property – online or off – and put an end to sweeping, unwarranted government surveillance!
