Well, there's a pretty big difference between a pardon and a commutation.

A pardon means you were excused from all culpability.

A commutation just means that your sentence was a bit harsh.

Biden's commutations are particularly meaningless in that all of these people had already been transferred to home confinement due to their age and medical status.

This is going to be an increasing problem as we have a jail population that is aging. How do we handle thousands of septuagenarian and octogenarian prisoners? While I have no problem with Charlie Manson being in prison until he died, I'm less sanguine about the lady who embezzled from her town for decades, and they recovered most of the money.

Final note, I do think there should be an ability by Congress to cancel a pardon if it is found to be unethical. Maybe with a 3/5th majority in both houses.

I like your last paragraph..... But I'm afraid the partisan pressures are so severe that it could basically virtually eliminate the pardon power altogether.

It's kind of like the presidential immunity thing.... Where it could possibly be used to excuse things that shouldn't be excused... Without it every president in office would be sued into complete political paralysis reflexively by the opposing party every single election cycle.

The reason why drugs are still illegal in this country is that we have too many ******* moral scolds of both stripes trying to moralize for us.

Perhaps But there's no question of the cartel money flowing into DC to protect the drug trade across the border.

Having said that I have long advocated for complete free access to the substances for the adults who want to do it.

In months the entire situation would be virtually gone. Why stop somebody from overdosing when they are determined to do it? Why bring them back four five and six times when they're only going for the 7th?

Why spend money on nacan and EMTs when that money could be better spent on citizens determined to lead a constructive life?

1.58% is not a huge margin. In fact, it's one of the smallest margins a candidate has won by.

That we still use this bizarre system to elect presidents (imagine what kind of turnout we'd have if people in all 50 states had votes that mattered!) isn't much to be proud of.

Buyer's remorse is already setting in with Trump.
