JUST minutes before it was about to leave the Pearl Continental Lahore, the Sri Lankan cricket team's security detail received a tip-off urging it to alter its route from the hotel to the stadium.
The call, believed to have come from Lahore police, warned of a credible threat to the team as it headed out by bus for the third day of its final Test match on its tour of Pakistan.
The security detail had good reason to heed the warning.
Only days earlier, the Punjab Interior Ministry had been warned by its federal counterpart that terrorists were planning to carry out an attack within 48hours.
Yesterday, as police continued to round up suspects in the nationwide hunt for 12 armed men who ambushed the Sri Lankan convoy on Tuesday, killing eight people and wounding at least 20, recriminations were flying over how such a stunning security breach could have occurred when Pakistan's failings have become the new focus in the war on terror.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik declared that the country was "in a state of war" against terrorists within its borders. A reward of $125,000 was offered.
Yet while dozens of people are understood to have been arrested in a series of police raids, Lahore's police chief Haji Habibur Rehman indicated yesterday that none of the attackers was among those detained.
