^^^ Only if the predicted item doesn't split apart before it hits the earth which is what made all of the difference in the movie. Harry Stamper and his posse were able to split the asteroid in half to where it would go past the globe without disturbing it in any way.

Actually, it was said during the film that firing every nuke known to man, cat, woman, dog, and monkey wouldn't do what needed to be done. Instead, several of the main characters landed on the asteroid and drilled an 800-foot hole in it which is where a bomb was placed to blow it in half, which they did.
