3 dead, 34 injured in crash at OSU parade; woman taken into custody for DUI

Three people were killed Saturday and 34 others injured when a car being driven by a suspected drunk driver crashed into a large crowd of spectators at the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, Adacia Chambers, 25, of Stillwater, Okla., was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Stillwater police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said at an afternoon press conference the woman's sedan struck the unoccupied motorcycle of an officer working security at the parade, then into the crowd of people. The crash happened around 10:30 a.m., police said.

Eight of the injured were airlifted to hospitals with critical injuries, Gibbs said.

Folks, you heard it here first....some black chick, who's boyfriend left her for a white girl, got drunk and decided to take it out on the public.....sad story for all!!

It's a terrible thing, but in a way you have to feel sorry for driver. She will sober up and realize she killed at least three people over a stupid mistake. No matter her sentence she will be punished for life.

Most of us will never have to worry about it, but some people do stupid shit that effects the rest of their lives. I had a friend who was killed when a tractor-trailer collided with him. The guy wasn't drunk or anything. I think he was just tired. I wanted to hate this man, but it was hard to. You know he thinks about that moment every day.

Got another prediction....LOOLO....her car was a Toyota.
I don't see any humor in this.................

People were just watching a home coming parade and died by a Drunk Driver.............More may die...............

This isn't funny.

Getting drunk and driving is as much of a choice as pulling and firing a gun. Murder 1 IF you think justice should be equal. Or you can ban those style of cars if you are an idiot.

Alcohol is a scourge to society, costing the country billions of dollars in lost productivity.

Hangovers: They're Costing the U.S. Economy
Excessive drinking doesn’t just result in a high bar tab, it also lowers productivity and costs the country billions.

One of my best friends can’t drink alcohol—at all. While that’s surely a bummer at times, it’s also had its upsides. First, she saves a ton of money when we go out. Without cocktails or beers, her bill is consistently 50 percent cheaper than everyone else’s. Second, having a friend who has been sipping water instead of wine has meant that at least one person is always able to make rational decisions, even after a long night.

That alone can be invaluable, especially since the cost of a wild night might be pricier than one might imagine. A new report from the Center for Disease Control finds that excessive drinking—particularly binging, defined as more than four drinks for women or more than five for men—cost the U.S. economy nearly $250 billion in 2010.

To come up with this price tag, the authors, Jeffrey J. Sacks, Katherine R. Gonzales, Ellen E. Bouchery, Laura E. Tomedi, and Robert D. Brewer tracked the price of lost productivity, criminal-justice fees for alcohol-related crimes, medical bills, and other costly ramifications associated with heavy drinking. They found that the most significant cost was the lost productivity of hungover workers who either showed up for work barely able to function, or who were unable to show up at all, which cost nearly $90 billion. In total, all forms of lost productivity accounted for about $179 billion of alcohol-related costs. The researchers estimate that the government, and thus taxpayers, cover about 40 percent of the total $250-billion bill.

Oklahoma woman charged with plowing into crowd had mental illness: lawyer
26 Oct.`15 -- A woman suspected of killing three adults and a toddler and injuring almost 50 people by ramming her car into Oklahoma State University’s homecoming parade has a history of mental illness, her father and attorney said on Monday.
A judge on Monday ordered that Adacia Chambers be held on $1 million bond on four counts of second-degree murder and granted a defense request that she be given a psychiatric examination. Chambers, who appeared by video link from jail in her first court proceeding since her arrest on Saturday, did not enter a plea. Second-degree murder can bring a sentence ranging from 10 years to life in prison. Another hearing was set for Nov. 13. Chambers is suspected of being intoxicated when she plowed her Hyundai Elantra at high speed into a crowd watching Saturday’s festivities in Stillwater, police said.

People attend to the injured at the scene of a car crash after a car drove into a homecoming parade at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma

Speaking to reporters at Payne County Courthouse, Chambers’ attorney, Tony Coleman, and her father, Floyd Chambers, said the 25-year-old woman had sought mental health treatment twice in recent years. According to Coleman, his client has little, if any, comprehension of what happened Saturday. "I mentioned to her again today that people died and I got no response. The look in her face - there's a very blank, lifeless look in her face," Coleman said after the hearing. Chambers said while being booked on Saturday that she has a history of suicide attempts and was suicidal at the time of the incident, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the court. Prosecutors said Chambers is a direct threat to the community, adding she committed "an act of depraved murder."

One of the victims of the incident was in "a fragile condition" and the death toll could go higher, prosecutors said. An emotional Floyd Chambers said after the hearing that his family could not afford the bond for his daughter set by Judge Kathy Thomas. He also said he has no answers for what happened. Killed on the scene were a married couple, Bonnie and Marvin Stone, both 65 and of Stillwater, as well as Nikita Nakal, 23, of Mumbai, India. Two-year-old Nash Lucas, of Weatherford, Oklahoma, died later at a hospital, police said. Four dozen people were also injured, five of them critically, in the incident that sent shockwaves through the college town about 70 miles (115 km) west of Tulsa. The crash was captured on cellphone video and seen globally.

Driver Adacia Chambers faces murder charges in Oklahoma State crash
Sun October 25, 2015 | The woman accused of driving under the influence and plowing her car into a crowd of spectators at an Oklahoma State University homecoming parade also faces murder charges, police said Sunday.
Adacia Chambers is being held in jail on four counts of second-degree murder for Saturday's deadly crash, which killed four people and injured dozens more. If convicted, she could face life in prison, police said. Chambers, 25, is set to appear in court on Monday, the Stillwater Police Department said in a statement. The Saturday crash at the Oklahoma State University parade killed a toddler, a graduate student and a couple who'd worked at the school for decades, officials said. It also injured dozens of people, including 11 victims younger than 13.

Injured victims' families await word

A day later, family members of the injured waited for word as their loved ones underwent surgeries and medical tests. "It's been a crazy 24 hours," Mark McNitt said, tearing up as he told reporters about the crash and its aftermath. One minute, McNitt was standing beside his stepfather, 54-year-old Leo Schmitz, near the end of the parade route. The next minute, he said, things were so chaotic it seemed like a bomb had gone off. "All I remember is a gush of wind, and then the sound. Leo, who was standing next to me, wasn't standing next to me. He was off to the side," McNitt said.

Now his stepfather is one of four patients who remain in critical condition, while family members keep vigil. McNitt described his injuries as severe, but he praised doctors for their care and people from across the state for coming together during the tragedy. "We missed the game," he said, "but we feel the love, and we'll get through this."

A family mourns
