You didn't see it in the picture because they are white at the bottom, and it is sticking straight up.
The reason warriors wore few feathers is because you could only get a feather in a few ways.
They represented major accomplishments, and meant just about the same thing as service medals for victory and valor in combat.
The reason chiefs often wore more feathers is because they didn't have to personally earn all their feathers.
The feathers they wore could recognize their own accomplishments, but could also be passed down from elders,
and in a sense the elder would be passing their "medicine" with the feather.
Since a Native tribes viewed the tribe as a family ... The feathers didn't even have to follow a particular lineage.
