Something interesting took place in a class today. I try to involve my students in the mechanics of a class. It makes them feel more invested and part of the direction of the class. Every day I choose a different student to help me take attendance by calling out the names on the roster. The students compete to be chosen for this. Today, I had one student who is more advanced compared to the rest of the class. I explained a somewhat complicated exercise to him until he fully understood it then had him explain it to the whole class in Spanish. As he did so, another student jumped up and started simultaneously translating what he was saying in English. The whole class was captivated. I had to correct his Spanish and her English a few times, but they basically got it. Then, without direction from me the students formed up into groups and started working on the exercise together. I just sat there in awe. Some students needed some clarification and correction, but the kids did a great job. It was very impressive.

What possible use is Spanish in a High Tech Society?
