What do students get out of the assignment being dragged out because everything has to be sequentially repeated multiple times in languages they do not understand? The goal is not to finish as quickly as possible. The goal is to get as much out of it as possible.
"Dragged out"? Explaining the assignment took about two minutes. Stop trying so hard. What do students get out of the assignment being dragged out because everything has to be sequentially repeated multiple times in languages they do not understand?
So it took 2 minutes to give a 30 second assignment explanation in four languages. Got it."Dragged out"? Explaining the assignment took about two minutes.
Stop pretending your class is anything approaching efficient.Stop trying so hard.
What the hell are you talking about? Have you ever taught a class? So it took 2 minutes to give a 30 second assignment explanation in four languages. Got it.
Now multiply that by everything that is spoken in the class. Everything is repeated multiple times. The kids are basically getting what, 50%? 33% of the education that a class of kids who all spoke the same language would get?
Stop pretending your class is anything approaching efficient.
So, trust you who wasn't there, or trust what I saw happen well over a hundred times in ten years. Sorry, experience trumps theory every time.Sometimes people don't understand what they think they are seeing. Trust me.
And if it takes four times as long to accomplish a task, only 25% of the desired or necessary tasks get accomplished. Your students get promoted lacking 75% of the learning they should have had and that you were getting aid to give them. Which puts them behind the educational curve for their next grade and if that teacher works like you do, the problem snowballs and the end result is the Baltimore schools where none of the High School graduates can read, write or do math. The goal is not to finish as quickly as possible. The goal is to get as much out of it as possible.
I've sat in on classes where they attempted to teach in multiple languages. It doesn't work very well. What the hell are you talking about? Have you ever taught a class?
You realize I'm talking about an ESL class, right? And if it takes four times as long to accomplish a task, only 25% of the desired or necessary tasks get accomplished. Your students get promoted lacking 75% of the learning they should have had and that you were getting aid to give them. Which puts them behind the educational curve for their next grade and if that teacher works like you do, the problem snowballs and the end result is the Baltimore schools where none of the High School graduates can read, write or do math.
I've never coached professional football either, but I can tell a good coach from a shitty one.In other words, NO.
So don't trust your own eyes?Sometimes people don't understand what they think they are seeing. Trust me.
The problem is the brain, not the eyes. I've seen people losing their shit watching a 0-0 soccer game while to me it just looks like grown men dressed like children running back and forth for an hour and a half to NO effect. I've had people watch D1 national championship wrestling and find it "boring" because they can't appreciate what they are looking at. Even moreso with Sumo.So don't trust your own eyes?
Don't sweat it You have no responsibility to explain any of that to idiots, and no need to explain it to sane people. Your work is valuable, and and helps more than the students you have in your class. If the hateful and selfish fools among us can't figure that out, then fuckem.I have no reason to believe you can.
I'm talking about experience. Over 30 years of this exact experience, and highly specialized training and education about this exact topic.
Why are you having such trouble talking to your fellow trumptards? You have no idea what you're talking about. It's almost funny.
That’s fantastic life experience for themYesterday I had an interesting experience in my last class of the day. I try to include my students in the logistics, content and conduct of a class. It makes them feel more fully involved and valued. It also shows them that their L1 and family heritage are included and respected, which can be highly motivating.
So, yesterday I had planned an activity that required some extensive instructions (not really, but try it in your second language and you'll know what I mean). I stood at the front of the class and explained the activity to the students. I also had four students "help" me ensure everyone understood what to do. This particular group could have understood me well enough in English only, and I could have translated it myself, but including the students on various levels keeps them engaged. Anyway, as I gave directions in English, I had four student standing with me at the front of the class translating in turn what I was saying. The first student in Spanish, next in French, next in Portugese, and finally in Arabic. The Arabic speaking student was the only Arabic speaker in the class, but I wanted her to feel included.
The class seemed to understand and appreciate what I was doing. We will complete the assignment today.
