Hopefully this can be discussed without any fighting since it is not a political subject and I dont see how it could be without really digging deep and stretching things.
Any way, I went into work last night and had a message in my in box that the company had decided to stop processing pay roll on their own and instead would now be farming this job out to a company I had never heard of that is located in another state. The notice had the instructions for me to log in.
The way it works is that we log onto the website with our password and user name (that they gave us, we did not pick, and simply click on the button that shows we got to work and were starting our shift. (this is all new to me as I have never used a time clock in my entire working career). We then log out of work in the same way.
So I did this, I think I lost a half hour pay because I worked the 8pm to 8am shift last night and the system just started at midnight so I had to record my time from midnight till 8am on the new site. I forgot to do it at midnight and did not log in until 12:30am. Oh well, my fault.
Right off I didnt think anything of it, was no big deal, but then I started looking at the site, specifically my profile. It has all of my information on it, bank account number for my direct deposit, address, birth date, SSN, number of deductions and my personal cell phone number. Then you have to answer security questions that are used if you forget your login information or log on from a computer or cell phone that is not recognized. as in, I always log in from my office computer but this time I log in from my home computer etc...
I got to thinking, in the first place the company I work for never asked for input from the employees, they just did this, no permission to turn all of our information over to a third part that we didnt know. Then when you look at the information that they have now at the payroll place, there is enough there to steal someones identity, and to make it even a bit stranger to me, the security questions that you have to answer are things like, mothers maiden name, street you grew up on, fathers middle name, more things that only you would know.
I was able to go in and change my phone number to a fake number, the number is a required field so I just couldnt leave it blank.
but, how do you people feel about this? would you be comfortable with all of your personal information being handed over to some company in another state? Should the company I work for asked us before giving all of our personal information out like that.
There is enough information on that site for someone to assume my identity. or make transfers from my bank account to another.
The bank part will be corrected tomorrow, I will open a new account and move all of my money over to the new one, the one now that has been compromised will have to stay open in order for my checks to show up, but I will un-link it from all the rest of my accounts and only keep 10 dollars or something in it to reduce exposure to loss.
So again, would you be just slightly upset or concerned with this if you suddenly found out all of your personal information was given away like that without you being consulted first?
I think I should have had an option to keep my information private.

1. With your accounts keep a minimum of one hundred dollars in there and do bank to bank transfer to other accounts to secure your money or use a prepaid debit card that can be uploaded with Direct Deposit and then do your transfer from there.

2. I would believe the Company would have given you notice ( usually thirty to sixty days ) before switching the accounting from in-house to outsourcing to another state so they could get feed back how the employee's felt.

If you are Union then I would talk to your Union Rep and ask them what the hell is going on and if non-Union, well you could go to HR and ask them but remember sometimes those wankers are not as kind.

3. As for your phone number, well I use a burner phone and keep my private phone separate from all my banking and business details unless it is needed.

So maybe look into obtaining a cheap burner phone to use as your contact number.

Finally:

The possibility of the accounting firm handling your payroll committing fraud or ID theft on you is rare. I would not say it can not happen but rare. The one thing you should worry more about is Cyber-Hacking and theft of information from third party individuals seeing this is more likely to happen.

Outside that I can not give anymore suggestions and now need to buy a house, car and porn in your name ( Just joking but I do understand your concerns )... :)

Don't worry about it. It is a microscopic risk that can be covered in a number of ways. If there is a serious problem, your employer is fully responsible.

Worry about AGW if you need something to hang onto.

How do I feel? I feel exactly as you do right now. In fact, it scares the shit out of me just reading your post. The NSA? Probably. I have to tell you that our youngest child is 9 years old and he is in the 3rd. class. At the beginning of this term we were sent a letter to inform us that his class (our boy's class) would be the first one to introduce "Chrome book". This is suppose to be used for home work and such. I immediately became uneasy because I know that Google has an agreement with the NSA, and there have been some scandalous reports of misuse/spying. Anyway, we have this thing at home and there is no "OFF" switch on it. You just close the lid and it is "suppose to be off". Should I tell you what I am thinking ..... or can you guess?

Anyway, you say that you have to sign-in your start time. I assume that you have to sign-in by the time your work day begins otherwise forfeit the minutes? So I guess if you sign-in one minute late you will lose that minute's pay but if you sign-in one minute too soon you won't get over time, right? Welcome to the IT world.

I do direct deposit also, however most companies do the processing on site.
Im not sure you understand what just happened, all of our information, enough to actually cause problems, has just been handed over to a third party without our consent.
Im not comfortable with this in todays climate in this country and I think that my information should be limited to those people I gave specific permission to see. None of these people at this processing place have that permission.
I actually feel almost as if Ive been violated in some way.
And, having spent over 20 years as a network engineer, and in data security, I can tell you that not only is it easier than you would think to hack into a "secure" server, but the fact that this processing company handles many companies with many employees each, their server stands out to those looking for information that they can create fake records.

True, but the same could be said about the people who work for your company that process your info. I'm sure they take security measures to guard your information. If anything happens with your information, that company would be liable.

I hate working for a company that treats its employees like children, micromanage and fire people all the time.

I would hate to think my personal info could be revealed in a wiki dump if I ever should do my fellow Americans the grievous, unforgivable offensive of running for president.
