What I find odd about this is since when did you neotards care about Nasa?? You have defunded that organization for years?? Care to talk about the funds the Bush administration took away??
Another thing.. Faux Noise seems to be the only one that carries that version of the article..
Since Obama's budget would give Nasa an extra 276 million more than the previous year.. Yes he is killing the lunar project?? So what? There is little to be had on the moon.. We would be better off putting the money into a space taxi of sorts and extending the space station..
OMG!!!
washingtonpost.com
That is exactly what he did..
So?? Why can't you neotards ever tell the truth?? Wait?? Dumb question.. As long as you watch fixnews you will always be lying your ass off..
Nasa got an increase.. Not a cut.. At least get that part right.. He is just spending the money in different ways..
I am so tired of your morons always getting it wrong..
As seen in the year-by-year breakdown listed below, the total amounts (in nominal dollars) that NASA has been budgeted from 1958 to 2008 amounts to $416 billion dollars—an average of $8.17 billion per year. By way of comparison, total spending over this period by the National Science Foundation was roughly one-fourth of NASA's expenditures: 101.5 billion, or $2.00 billion a year.[2]
According to the Office of Management and Budget and the Air Force Almanac, when measured in real terms (Meaning: if the value of $1.00 at today's rate equaled the value of $1.00 in 1958), the figure is $806.7 billion, or an average of $15.818 billion dollars per year over its fifty year history.
NASA Budget - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If you look at NASA's budget history your statement doesn't hold true on one party not supporting NASA.
"Let’s hope the commercial rockets work, but what I want to do is keep the research going on the Ares 1 test vehicle in order to build a heavy-lift vehicle,” Sen. Bill Nelson, Florida Democrat, told The Washington Times. Mr. Nelson is also chairman of the Senate subcommittee on space. "Now the problem is the path that we were on. The rocket wasn’t going to be ready until 2018, so the administration had to try something new, but it’s a choice between two bad choices."
The Ares 1 is the launch vehicle meant for the Constellation program, and the Ares 5 is the next-generation launch vehicle meant to send unmanned payloads to Earth orbit. Mr. Nelson described his support for the continued research of the Ares 5.
"What some people are calling the Ares 5 would allow us to get out of low Earth orbit, go to the moon, go to an asteroid, go to a moon of Mars, but I think we’re going to have a fight with the White House,” he said.
A former space shuttle astronaut himself, Mr. Nelson told the Washington Times he had serious concerns about the elimination of the lunar program from the budget, saying, "We’re putting all of our eggs in the basket that the commercial operators building a brand-new rocket from scratch are going to be successful, not only for cargo to get to the space station but human-rated to get our astronauts to the space station.”

From the answers emerged six common areas of interest – six areas of pursuit which, seen through the eyes of the world, define the value of going to the moon. NASA took these six ideas and worked with other space agencies to develop the following lunar exploration themes. View a video on each theme in the Related Multimedia section below.
Human Civilization
Extend human presence to the moon to enable eventual settlement.
Scientific Knowledge
Pursue scientific activities that address fundamental questions about the history of Earth, the solar system and the universe - and about our place in them.
Exploration Preparation
Test technologies, systems, flight operations and exploration techniques to reduce the risks and increase the productivity of future missions to Mars and beyond.
Global Partnerships
Provide a challenging, shared and peaceful activity that unites nations in pursuit of common objectives.
Economic Expansion
Expand Earth's economic sphere, and conduct lunar activities with benefits to life on the home planet.
NASA - Why The Moon?
Obama proposed a $100 billion five-year budget for NASA on Monday that includes a $6 billion increase for the space agency. The budget signaled a major shift for NASA, with increased spending for new, "transformative technologies" and the cancellation of the Constellation program — the mission former president George W. Bush launched in 2005 to send humans back to the moon by 2020.
NASA's new strategy is a good fit for what Ames has already been doing, Braxton said. NASA uses small satellites to test out new technologies in space on a small scale, and Braxton said he expects that work to now expand. He added that Ames' supercomputing
abilities could be a big part of NASA's renewed focus on climate modeling.

I'm fully aware that this PROPOSED budget has increased funding to NASA and this funding is focused in two areas, one is the study of earth sciences i.e. climate change and the other is retasking NASA's lifting capacity to private enterprise. Have you even read the report from the Augustine Commission ?
President Obama’s administration has proposed a radical change in not only NASA’s budget but in the whole concept of how they will do business. The plan conceived several years ago to replace the aging Space Shuttle with the Ares I and V rockets and the long term Constellation manned spacecraft are being ended. In their place will be a push for the development of commercially designed and built booster systems.
The end result of a review of NASA’s future by the Augustine Commission as well as what seems to be a significant shift in the science investment plans of the new Administration the new focus of NASA will be earth science research and climate change. The International Space Station (ISS) will continue to operate although it will now rely on Russian systems for support as the Space Shuttle looks at its last flight this Fall. NASA had already awarded contracts for commercial development of supply vessels for the ISS and the idea of using similar contracts for launching men in to space may just be a rational continuation of those plans.

When the Shuttle makes it's last flight this fall , Rocket -X or Virgin Galactic will not be stepping in to resume those flights to the ISS as a private enterprise.
Commercial Crew Transport to the International Space Station
Congress has now officially authorized and appropriated the $50M Commercial Crew Development program, which aligns with the Augustine Commission’s recommendation for a robust, multi-year commercial human spaceflight initiative. Click the link above for program details.

Want to know how much experience Space-X has in human space flight? ZERO and the Falcon 9 is in it's infancy, so to develop this ability will be a LONG way off. Which means, that the ISS is basically now a Russian facility that we have to beg rides too. I tend to agree Dr. Harrison Schmitt the last man to walk on the moon and that is there is a really good reason to walk on the moon and thats energy and that Govts. LACK the vision and the strength to take up such an adventure. Further, he has made it clear that NASA has become a protectionist agency more interested in procedure than they are in risk taking and actual discovery. So the one positive benefit of all this will hopefully be that this companies like Rocket-X and Virgin Galactic might end up doing what our Govt. has been unable to do and thats have the vision needed to explore space.
One other thing worth noting here, this is not the 1960's people, our society is very dependent on space for it's defense, it's communications, and yes even it's entertainment. Everything from your favorite TV program to your cell phone to a missile gets data from space at some point. So to simply dismiss NASA altogether or for that matter a space program that has contributed to the advancement of science is to accept that your nation is ready to be less than the best. If this is acceptable to you then by all means continue.
