The government and media have run those sensational headlines for many long decades, and a certain segment of the people believe every word they say. From the bureaucratic perspective, the drug prohibition is the Goose That Lays Golden Eggs. The DEA would not exist if not for the prohibition. The Bureau Of Prisons would be only half full or less if not for the drug war.
