Yes, this is an over-reaction.
But this is what happens when the left constantly expropriates ordinary innocent words and symbols and turns them into something that goes against the beliefs of ordinary Americans. The word “liberal,” is a perfect example. It used to be that libertarians, like myself, used that term to describe our belief in freedom. Then American socialists began using it to describe the most anti-freedom movement in American history since the slave trade.
Yes, unicorns and rainbows have an innocent meaning. But thanks to the anti-childhood left, they also have a more sinister meaning. Suppose I wrote a children’s book about a boy who is grumpy until he learns that by taking a happy attitude, he can be a happier person. Suppose I called it, “How Joey Learned to be Gay.”
Any objections?
I’m sure the liberals would love such a book and call people book burners for opposing it, so long as Joey learned to be happy sitting on the lap of his middle-aged social studies teacher.
