every year I notice stories about paintings that are "stolen" then "found" later.



They tell us about how someone walked off with a masterpiece from a guarded museum, then the painting
turned up somewhere.



The whole idea doesn't make sense.

Is someone going to place the Mona Lisa on Craigslist?





either

1) These painting are being copied and the originals are placed in an archive somewhere.

or

2) These painting are being copied and the originals are hanging on some billionaire's wall.



hoards of people are walking through museums that display copies made within 30 years ago.

That's my theory
/----/ I'm sure it happens on a regular basis especially with abstract and impressionist work. The classics are harder to forge due to pigments, canvass, panels and techniques.
 
people can't closely examine paintings.
who will know if the magic gloss on the Mona Lisa isn't right?
80% of the "experts" are probably actors anyway
