A couple of months ago, President Obama noted that terrorist leaders "seem nervous" with the change in U.S. administrations. It seems al Qaeda leaders are intent on proving the president right.

In the latest example, Ayman al-Zawahri has begged Muslims not to like Obama, and tried to convince his audience that Obama is practically identical to George W. Bush.

"America came to us with a new face, with which it is trying to fool us. He is calling for change, but (he aims) to change us so that we abandon our religion and rights," Ayman al-Zawahri said in an audio recording on the website.

Zawahri said Obama's election was an acknowledgement that Bush's policy had failed.

"Obama did not change the image of America among Muslims...America is still killing Muslims," said the Egyptian militant leader.

Zawahri's public-relations panic fits in nicely with the larger trend (indeed, Zawahri was similarly defensive about Obama in early February). Al Qaeda leaders were able to exploit George W. Bush's policies to recruit, expand, and raise money. The terrorist network is now in a much tougher position, not only in light of Bush's departure, but also with Barack Obama's international popularity. The very last thing al Qaeda wanted was a U.S. president who enjoys global admiration -- and that's exactly what they're responding to.

The result is a terrorist network with panicky pleas, urging followers and potential sympathetic ears to think of Bush and Obama as one in the same -- reality notwithstanding.

Rita Katz, who created the Site Intelligence Group, a private company that monitors jihadist communications, recently said the terrorist's hysterical rants against the president show "just how much al Qaeda is intimidated by Obama."

But Islamic terrorism is a POLTICAL MOVEMENT.

Hence popularity and public opinion, both about the terrorists' organization and their enemies, matters as much to Al Qaeda as it does to the US government.

These so called wars are really idealogical battles for the HEARTS AND MINDS of the people, folks.

While I don't agree with torturing prisoners in most cases, Abu Ghraib was not condoned by our government, and those involved were punished. Other forms of torture such as waterboarding and keeping prisoners without cause probably wasn't the right thing to do. However, the belief that we would never use such tactics or even worse under Obama is a fallacy. Given the right circumstances, even Obama would authorize torture.

What people like you don't realize is that Bush & Co. tied up Al Qaida's finances, and put holes in their operations worldwide, making it much more difficult for the to strike us again. The belief that this is strictly a political war that we can win by showing them that we really are nice people is not going to keep us safe from future attacks. By letting our guard down, we are much more likely to be attacked again, possibly in a much more damaging way than 9/11.

The idea that this is a political war of ideology and that it can be won through diplomacy is just inaccurate. The biggest problem is that those like you don't see this as a war, but the radicals who hate us so much know it is a war that they are intent on winning at any cost. And playing nice with them is not going to change their view on this.

The recruitment abilities of Al Qaeda and similar jihadist organizations will entirely depend on whether Obama insists on perpetuating neoconservative policies in regards to Middle Eastern affairs. If, for instance, he does nothing about unconditional and unregulated U.S. aid to Israel even as the government of that state takes provocative actions, disdain for him amongst the Muslim population will undoubtedly grow, thus increasing the strategic liability of the alliance. To really visualize where we are headed, we will need to watch Europe over the next fifty years. How Europe deals with Muslim expansion from within will give us a better idea of what type of world we shall be living in. It is very difficult to predict what may happen in Europe. Whatever path is chosen however, it will almost certainly bring an end to democracy in Europe.

On one hand, Muslims will become the majority and once in control, they will move to a theocratic form of government, making all non-Muslims second class citizens, and eventually relegating them to an ever diminishing percentage of the populace. The expansion of the Caliphate will be upon us.

On the other hand, there could be a complete backlash against European Muslims which will result in an authoritarian form of government that will try to subdue the Muslim expansion and possibly even force Muslims back to their former lands.

The most unlikely outcome would be for Muslims to become the majority in Europe, and to then see Muslims and non-Muslims live in peace throughout Europe, happily forever. To believe that this type of outcome is possible, you would have to believe that Lebanon is one of the greatest places to live today. Unfortunately, it once was a wonderful place to live. Now, Christians and any other non-Muslims live in fear and are slowly but surely trying to find ways to leave. Eventually, Lebanon will be another completely Muslim country with a few small communities of non-Muslims who will live as second class citizens as other non-Muslims live as second class citizens in Muslim countries today.

The problem is that we have this belief that it is only the radical Muslims who wish to see us fall. The truth is that even the so-called moderates within Islam hope for the "one world under Islam". They may not completely agree with the means used by the radical element within Islam, but they do support the same goal. And as for democracy within Islam, it does not fare well. Indonesia is the only Muslim country where the two have worked together. Unfortunately, that situation is not likely to remain permanent as the more conservative fringe of Islam continues to make inroads in Indonesia.
