EU and World Bank Partner with Obama to Halt Funding for Coal

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

The developed world is turning against coal and opting to fund more green power sources. The European Union’s finance arm announced on Wednesday it would stop financing most coal-fired power plants as part of Europe’s effort to fight global warming.

This move comes in the wake of other major announcements by President Obama and international finance agencies to stop funding coal-fired power plants, especially in developing countries which rely on coal power the most.

China Boosts Wind Power Output 41%, Edges Closer to 2015 Target - Bloomberg

China, the world’s biggest wind power market, posted a 41 percent surge in the production of electricity from wind in 2012, bringing the nation a step closer to meet its goal in three years.

The country generated 100.8 billion kilowatt-hours of wind power last year, compared with 71.5 billion kilowatt-hours in 2011, the National Energy Administration said today in a statement on its website. Total grid-connected installed capacity increased 31 percent to 62.7 gigawatts from 47.9 gigawatts in 2011.

China said in August that it aims to install 100 gigawatts of grid-connected wind farms by 2015 and to generate 190 billion kilowatt-hours of power.

Wind energy has become the Asian nation’s third-biggest energy resource, following coal and hydropower, and accounts for about 2 percent of total electricity, according to data from China’s State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

China to Boost Solar Power Goal 67% as Smog Envelops Beijing - Bloomberg

China plans to increase its goal for solar-power installations in 2015 by 67 percent to reduce reliance on fossil fuels blamed for greenhouse gases and as smog in Beijing reached record hazardous levels this month.

The world’s biggest emitter of carbon-dioxide plans to raise the solar target to 35 gigawatts by 2015 from 21 gigawatts set last year, boosting demand for manufactures that suffer from slowing sales in Europe, Shi Dinghuan, the counselor of China’s State Council and the president of Chinese Renewable Energy Society, said today by phone.

“We’ve got more pressure to save energy and reduce emissions as smog worsens due to pollution,” he said. China will use renewable energy to cut coal consumption and support the domestic industry amid U.S. and Europe anti-dumping charges against Chinese solar products, Shi said.

The increase in solar installations first appeared in the Economic Observer today. Shares of solar-device maker China Singyes Solar Technologies Holdings Ltd. (750) rose 2.1 percent in Hong Kong. The new target would increase solar power installations by more than five-fold from 6.5 gigawatts of capacity as of the end of last year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance data.

China: Wood Mackenzie Says Thermal Coal Demand Will Reach Nearly 7btpa by 2030

SINGAPORE/EDINBURGH/HOUSTON, 4th June 2013 – Wood Mackenzie's report titled 'China: The Illusion of Peak Coal' says that despite efforts to limit coal consumption and seek alternative fuel options, China's strong appetite for thermal coal will lead to a doubling of demand by 2030. China’s demand will grow to approximately seven billion tonnes per annum (btpa) of thermal coal which is contrary to speculation that China's thermal coal demand may be reaching a peak in the next decade.

"It is very unlikely that demand for thermal coal in China will peak before 2030," states Mr. William Durbin, Wood Mackenzie’s Beijing-based President of Global Markets. "Why? Because China’s aggressive investment program for nuclear, natural gas and renewables capacity is centred in the coastal region while coal-fired capacity grows in the central and western provinces. Indeed, there are also a plethora of coal-intensive conversion projects being built or planned that are significantly adding to demand.”

China would be much better served if it focused its financial and scientific resources on "clean coal" technology. Same for the rest of the world.

It's a joke and a denial of reality to believe that coal can be supplanted by "clean" alternatives.
It couldn't happen in 100 years, at any cost.
