ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York is set to become the latest state to legalize medically assisted suicide for the terminally ill under a deal reached between the governor and state legislative leaders announced Wednesday.

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to sign the proposal next year after pushing to add a series of “guardrails” in the bill, she announced in an op-ed in the Albany Times Union.

A dozen other states and the District of Columbia have laws to allow medically assisted suicide, according to advocates, including a law in Illinois signed last week that goes into effect next year.

New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act requires that a terminally ill person who is expected to die within six month make a written request for life-ending drugs. Two witnesses would have to sign the request to ensure that the patient is not being coerced.

The request would then have to be approved by the person’s attending physician as well as a consulting physician.

OK, it's true....Blue states (and Canada) want to kill you. ;)

Yet the same bunch will tell you how bad the death penalty is....Go figure. :eusa_wall:

you're against people cognizant of their impending demise, and not wishing to endure the obvious pain they suffer, not to mention the drain on finances wanting to end it all?

Not at all. I'm against someone else doing it to them.

As folks age one of their biggest fears is being stuck in a nursing home and being cognizant enough to see everything they worked for being sold off to pay the bill till you are reduced to Medicare.

I was facing that with my mom but she did not last two weeks in the home....7K a month!

Yeah, I'd take "the pod" over that BS any day.

What you need to know is this is done all the time when patients er in chronic pain and terminal.

Depends........a good friend of mine was going through his third round of cancer. I called him on a Friday. Sunday he was dead.

He was in a good bit of pain. Doctor prescribed him something for the pain. (a legit medical action).

He was told that if he took too many he wouldn't wake up............

Meanwhile, in Delaware, Biden will receive the best care an Ex president can get, no matter how much pain he is in, and despite his desire to end it all.

Yeah, I think that's what happened with my mom.....They hit her with morphine and she did not wake up.

I didn't say anything as it was better than going out in both pain and delirium.

They will gently increase the morphine until she painlessly falls asleep and has good dreams

Generally in those cases the person is dying. Their organs are shutting down. Increased morphine is applied as the pain gets worse.

The person is dying, not being killed.

The drug is what ends their life before the disease
