Companies should have every right to discriminate against whoever they want.

They already do, it's called "Affirmative Action" and "Diversity".

Some good responses here, but also some ridiculous ones. In no particular order of importance:

I've never quite understood the "rich corporate Wall St. Republicans" rants when there are PLENTY of Democrats deeply entrenched in these same entities - perhaps one of the most notorious being George Soros.

As to lawyers - the majority of lawyers are Democrats and my opinion is that the "dregs" of the legal arena are those who are in it strictly for the money - as in those who will leap at ANY little hint of possibility to take on mass tort (including medical) lawsuits. THEY are the ones who profit most from these cases - NOT the purported "victims." Serious tort reform is an absolute necessity when it comes to cutting medical and insurance costs. I say these things as a retired legal secretary who has seen a lot during my long career.

Government and its various departments and agencies need to be drastically cut down to size - some of them being eliminated completely: Freddie and Fannie come to mind. Again, from early career knowledge and experience, government is WAY overstaffed by a lot of dead wood. It should not take 10 or 15 people to do the work of 1 person - and take months or years of paper-pushing to get the job done. I also know from experience that way too many of these paper-pushers cannot - CANNOT - function in the real world of private employers - and they go back to government employment. The US Supreme Court should be absolutely restricted to ruling on US Constitutional laws and screw "international" law, European law, or any other law. Supreme Court nominees - for that matter any nominee for a federal bench - should be investigated right down to the last hair on their heads AND public disclosure of the findings given before being confirmed.

Taxation, rules, regulations, exceptions, multiple forms, is a nightmare. Again, many IRS employees including agents and attorneys don't know the tax code. It needs to be greatly simplified - even a new system altogether should be implemented. The environmentalists should be happy to see tons of trees being spared from the paper mills.

Our ports and borders should be drastically secured and illegal aliens should be way more restricted from entry and deportation should not even be a question - it should be strictly enforced.

The list of restrictions on government interference into our public and private lives is long ... very long.

I expect to see taxes on corporations to be reduced to zero.

We need even more Republicans subsidies to help companies move to China because the Chinese work for 51 cents an hour, work 60 to 70 hours a week, and don't expect nonsense like vacations and health care.

We need to bomb Iran, rebuild that country and replace the government with an even more radical, religious, hard right Islamic government like we did in Iraq.

We need to move the entire tax burden to those making under 200,000 a year where it belongs.

We need to make Christianity the "official" religion of the United States. Freedom of religion doesn't mean freedom FROM religion.

We need to subsidize oil companies to come here and drill where ever they want because they bring jobs we can't send to China.

We need to end education and leave it up to the parents. It's their kid, it should be their responsibility.

We need to end Social Security and Medicare. Old people should have planned when they were younger. It's not our job to take care of them now.

We need to end unemployment benefits. Just because you have an elitist PhD doesn't mean you can't work at McDonald's.

When I can think of a few more ways to "improve" America, I will post them.

And stop saying "create" jobs. Government doesn't create jobs.

First - We need is a balanced budget amendment to the constitution.

Biggest problem with the Balanced Budget Amendment isn't so much the passing it (which would be hard), its the reality that there will come a time in a nation's history where it absolutely must engage in deficit spending, at least in the short run, to survive.

For example: It is pretty difficult to actually go to war and maintain a war footing without deficit spending. National catastrophe usually results in short term deficit spending to ensure a limited loss of life and continuance of government.

For that reason, any amendment requiring a balanced budget would necessarily have to include a way to lift that restriction in the case of emergency. That would completely undercut why the amendment was passed in the first place as each instance where the restriction was lifted would make it easier for people mentally to accept lifting the restriction in the future. Such an amendment would likely be useless within 50 years at the very latest.

Don't get me wrong, I want a balanced budget. I've said earlier in the thread that I think every American needs to have an itemized tax line on their paycheck related to the debt specifically in order to help people wake up to what their share of the debt is. Until each and every person understands their share and personally feels the pain of carrying that share, nothing will be done about deficit spending or the debt. I just have serious doubts that a balanced budget amendment would actually be a workable solution to the problem.

Indeed. It's worth remembering that PAYGO has officially been a House rule this entire session of Congress (and federal statute since February of this year) but that House rule--unlike in the previous session--contains an explicit provision that allows an exemption for "emergency" legislation: "the [CBO's required deficit impact] evaluation under paragraph (a) shall exclude a provision expressly designated as an emergency for purposes of pay-as-you-go principles...".

I'm sure most people here have an idea of which pieces of legislation this term received an emergency designation.
