Northwestern University football players can unionize

The vast majority of college athletes are there to get an education. Yes, even the majority of football players are there for an education.

With all respect Unk, that's a pretty naive statement.

It's true. This generalization-fest is mainly about a very, very small minority among college athletes.

There's a difference between the cultures of other sports and basketball/football. And let's face it; basketball/football is the source of the money and the problems. Look at graduation rates of basketball/football and it's a different story.

African-American men’s basketball players, who graduated at a 68 percent rate – the highest ever for those groups. Each group gained one percentage point over the class that entered college in 2005.

That means that one of three black basketball players don't even graduate despite getting everything paid for. Am I supposed to be impressed?

You are "supposed to" see things in their proper perspective, not some "jocks R dumb" stereotype.

If one in three spoonfed joks aren't graduating, I'd say the stereotype is pretty damn true and that you are quite the intellectual relativist.

And is it the system that prevents graduation, or is it the individual studen-athlete?

I hope you find the help you need to get over your insecurity someday, little precious. Oh wait, actually I don't give a shit if you do or not.

Did your inferiority complex begin in college, or was it the product of early childhood trauma? Oh wait...

You live in your own petty world. And I certainly am not worried about your associative petty insults.

It's the individual student-athlete.

Thank you.

It frankly is. There are a great many students who come to the university who are not capable of graduating. I could give you that. But the system is designed for otherwise prepared and responsible students to graduate.

And the athletes play a part in that. Some will work hard and graduate. Some will work hard and go on to careers in pro sports or in coaching. And some will just be a part of the fun and excitement of the sport.

The National Labor Relations Board in Chicago has ruled that football players at Northwestern University are employees and can unionize, the board said Wednesday.
So is this the end of college football?

How dare the players demand that the bodily harm and risk they take on the field for the glory and enormous monetary gain of these institutions by their participation be compensated and their future health costs be gauranteed. HOW DARE THEY !!!

When you put it that way, 68 percent graduation doesn't sound so bad. But the truth is a lot of colleges have a lot of back-door methods for the sake of keeping their players eligible to play. The expectation upon learning that should be there has been eradicated in favor of big business. For this reason, I'm actually for getting rid of athletic scholarships and having the sports programs be a release for real students; as was the original intent. Real students shouldn't have to be taking a backseat to hired guns.

Yea, a quarter million dollar scholarship and medical costs isn't enough? I submit that it is plenty. That doesn't erase the problems on the back end of things; meaning the corruption among the administrations, who are getting unduly rich on their backs.

I don't know if student athletes need make fortunes participating in these sporting events but certainly medical coverage should be gauranteed as well as all future costs of their education should injury cost them the ability to continue on the field.

The NCAA requires that they have medical insurance before they are allowed to practice or play. Some schools duck this or don't provide what they should. But that is the exception rather than the rule.

They do have that. Players do not have their scholarships canceled due to injury. Personally, I think it should be contingent on whether they're getting grade throughout though. That's a big part of the problem is the lack of standards.

Ah, the therapy is working already. Don't you worry, those stronger, faster, more talented boys (and girls) won't hurt you anymore...
