Northwestern University football players can unionize

Something that was pure and about the students has been lost.

Go easy on the hyperbole. It hasn't "been lost."

It's not hyperbole, nit wit. Something indeed has been lost. There used to be academic standards. And the athletics was about the students, not the coaches and athletic directors making millions for themselves....

When was this? I grew up in the 60s in Tuscaloosa AL. The football program was about winning. The players were far more likely to skip classes, take junk courses and just attend to play football back then than they are now.

And get a grand a month from an alum that owned a car dealership for turning on the lawn sprinklers once a day. Lol

Other than "pay me"

I think players should have the right to collectively bargain on safety concerns, medical care, scholarship rules and dozens of other issues

They should also be allowed to give paid endorsements, paid autographs and receive a cut of shoe contracts and other income not directly related to playing

That's putting the nuts in charge of the Asylum. If they have safety concerns, don't play. Dozens of issues is a Pandora's box.
I'll be amazed if the NCAA doesn't suspend all college sports until the ruling is overturned. Universities will lose trillions of dollars. Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, golf. Students getting half of all those revenues. Tuition will have to be doubled.

So they should shut-up and go away? I hope you didn't teach your kids that!

I had a good friend who played for Bear Bryant in mid 70s. He said his biggest problem was that the uniform pants had no pockets. As they walked into the stadium and shook hands with the alumni, he needed someplace to stick all the twenty dollar bills they palmed him.

You'd think the biggest problem would be getting mauled to death, cause, you know...bear...

Relax, Francis. There are still academic standards. Most college athletes are among the best students on campus and are there first and foremost to get an education. I would say most are much better at time management than their non-athletic peers because they have so much more to do.

The athletics is supposed to be for the real students, not for hired athletes. That has definitely been lost in many respects. Secondly, have you seen the graduation rates of many football and basketball programs? They're often jokes. And in the cases that they are getting better grades; well it might help that they're not having to to work 20-40 hours a week at real jobs like many college students have to do.

I think that was a problem. I have heard that the only person who was never afraid of him was his wife.

The UA's graduation rate for the football team is 73%. That is above the national average for regular students.

It has not been about students playing other schools since they wore those leather helmets.

And for all but a tiny minority, that's exactly what it is. Unbunch them panties already.

Did you get pushed around on campus, Poindexter? Seek help elsewhere for your trauma.

Do you guys really want to see tuition double to $400,000.00 for a four year degree? Well, I guess cons do, because then only the rich get educated, which is what THEY want. The ol' dumbing down of America. Another excuse to lower wages. That will put over half the universities out of business. Half as many football teams. Less competition. Half as many games on television means half as much paid out to NCAA.

Cons do? Excuse me, but Obama put three of the people in power who made this decision.

Then you should be happy that Obama is helping you. Cons are always stating that they want to destroy the DOE(DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION). If Obama was white, you'd thank him.

What does the DOE have to do with unionization? It's about as relevant as your phony racism after-thought, there.

We need to look at why many of these players are in college. Not to get a degree but to play ball. There are no minor leagues for football or basketball. You want to go to the next level...you play college

These players are there to learn football or basketball

The vast majority of college athletes are there to get an education. Yes, even the majority of football players are there for an education.

With all respect Unk, that's a pretty naive statement.

It's true. This generalization-fest is mainly about a very, very small minority among college athletes.
