There is a banner at the top of every page of this forum saying USMB is now partnered with NordVPN.

I understand USMB needs to pay for itself, but let me tell you about NordVPN.

It sucks.

I am trapped in a subscription to NordVPN and can't wait until it runs out.

NordVPN disconnects my laptop from my WiFi several times a day. VERY annoying.

I have to pause Nord to be able to reconnect my WiFi, which entirely defeats the purpose of the VPN!

I have gone to the Settings and used all the various protocols, but it eventually resets itself to "Automatic" and then begins disconnecting me from the internet again.

I also use NordVPN on my Android phone and it has no problems.

I hope this gives you an informed decision about whether or not to sign up.

That is all.

I use avast VPN, you can or did find on amazon a 1 or 2 year code for fairly cheap

Mine was going to run out a month ago, checked amazon and ......gone?

checked ebay, bought from a good selling from the UK for 2 years, all good to go

avast wants WAY too much to extend your sub for a basic service

NordVPN is an app you buy directly from NordVPN and activate it immediately.

There is no hardware or whatever. It's an app.

What do you mean your bought your VPN on ebay?

No need for Amazon or eBay. That makes no sense.

I used Avast's antivirus many, many years ago. It sucked. I hope they have improved.

I use ESET and love it.

Here is the sad reality, most of these VPNs are not very effective. I suspect ISPs are finding loopholes to identify the major ones. If the government or someone else wants to track you, they can and will unfortunately. Now for use on Netflix or something I suppose it would work, but Netflix would know they just wouldnt care since they arent responsible for the jurisdiction restrictions, the government forces them based on movie licensing.etc. Egp is probably.talking about a hardware VPN which is more effective, especially from preventing attack or on a LAN

avast was good back in the day when defender sucked but it caught up

I removed avast AV from all my computers but their VPN is a stand alone and it's very solid

been using it for many years

What do you mean your bought your VPN on ebay?

I downloaded avast for free, I bought the key/sub from an ebay vender that sells legit keys

last time I bought it from amazon but oddly it's no longer available......

I paid a fraction of what the retail price is directly through avast

I am good for 2 more years.....then we will see

software VPN in which you connect to an anon server that masks your IP thus who you are, it's their job, the host to mask you

I can chose anywhere from seattle, miami or stockholm to where I "might" be

I don't need hardware, not a blackhat and nobody is going to attack me, I am nobody

I use the VPN to mask for various security reasons

Let's just say if you torrent anything.......use a VPN!!

Oh I thought you had a hardware VPN which also provides another layer of security. Its just standard VPN software then. They are definitely hit and miss.

works fine, again I am not a hacker that is trying to break into a federal building, just want to mask who I am when I go to certain places, I usually have it off even though it barely dents my fiber download speeds

pull up any what is my IP address

it will say what town you are in but not your exact house, who you are, etc

often if you get busted for say downloading something you should not it's your ISP that is going to flag you

if you mask this with a layer, they are clueless if your IP is showing you live 8 hours away or on another continent

some use a VPN in areas that block certain content, USA we don't have that worry

Iran........yeah, they curb what you can see..........N.Korea........holy hell, you can get executed for it

"but I just watched a clip from a k-pop band from S.Korea"

firing squad for you......

..........oh and to add there is no such thing as hardware VPN, if your router states it can that is all, you still need to pay for the service so you can connect to some host, the router does not just do that automatically

For instance I just turned avast on.......and

ISP: Performive LLC

City: Seattle

100% totally different IP than I have.

It doesnt matter, I presume neither of us do anything illegal, in my.case it is about being able to reach out to organizations without the Creepy Ones interferring further. ISP always knows where you are in my case it is particularly unsettling since I know how criminal this nation is and I presume they care too much what sesrch and who I reach out to.

correct, nothing illegal but how does your ISP know if you connect to some anon host.......they don't have the time and effort, they are not the FBI or in your country whatever is similar

rest easy, you are about 0.0000000001 a target for being some "bad" person

I am not a cheerleader for avast VPN but been using it for many years and it works

I have yet to get any cease and dissent letter.......

"cough" I did 15 years ago when I downloaded a movie from piratebay without a VPN ;)

No issues with Proton.

Also works as an ad blocker.
