06/25/2004: "Prometheus Radio Project"

Does that name ring any bells?

It's the name of the company that just won a decision against the FCC regarding media ownership. (Story here.)

I was listening to NPR's news summary today, and during this story the reporter mentioned that Prometheus was based in Philadelphia...and something clicked. Nicholas Berg, just before he was beheaded, said he was from Philadelphia, which isn't a big deal, but everyone remembers what Nick Berg was doing in Iraq: working on radio tower installations--for a company called "Prometheus Methods Tower Services Inc." Immediately after his death, investigators could find no trace of Berg's business:

Searching the statewide yellow pages online found two company names containing the word "Prometheus" in Philadelphia. One is an Internet consulting business.

An employee at the second one, which is called Prometheus Radio Project, said it was not affiliated with the business owned by the local man slain in Iraq by members of al-Qaida. [Strange wording, eh?]

At least one person claims he can confirm Prometheus’ existence....

Jay Shur, who works at the radio station WCHE 1520 AM in West Chester, said on Wednesday he was in the process of hiring Berg to build a communications tower for the station when news of his death came out.

The station was awaiting approval of plans from both the borough and an environmental agency before construction could begin, according to Shur.

"There’s a lot of paperwork to go through, and the area we were looking at was a marsh- land so we had to get clearance," he said."When I do get the OK, I’ll have to look for another contractor."

Michael Berg briefly spoke about Prometheus during a press conference Thursday morning outside his home.

"My son was not over there to make money," Michael Berg said. "My son’s business, which was very profitable before he went to Iraq ..I will make good on anything the company owes anybody, but it’s pretty much going to be defunct."

Some pretty strange coincidences, but they could just be coincidences, right? As for Prometheus Radio Project, what do they do when they're not suing the FCC?

They build radio towers in world hotspots.

So...we have two "nonprofit" businesses located in Philadelphia, doing the exact same kind of work, and having pretty similar names, but they're not affiliated in any way? We don't know why Nick Berg called his company Prometheus, but we do know why the "other" radio tower company in Philadelphia did:

The Prometheus Radio Project draws its name from the mythological Greek character who stole fire from the gods in order to share it with humans. We are a not-for-profit association dedicated to the democratization of the airwaves through the proliferation of non-commercial, community based, micropower radio stations. It is our belief that access to communications for all citizens is at the heart of a democratic society.

Michael Berg, Nick's father, has painted his son as a conservative supporter of President Bush, but if the two Prometheus's are one and the same, that image seems a little askew.

Another Strange Nick Berg Connection
There's a Sylvester Stallone comedy called Oscar. I seem to be the only person on the planet who likes this movie. I like the rapid-fire screwball thing.

Anyway, there's a guy named Anthony who keeps turning up in Stallone's life at every turn-- always doing no good or making trouble for him. Stealing from him, blackmailing him, demanding that Stallone allow him to marry his daughter who isn't his daughter (don't ask). Stallone spends most of the film escorting Anthony to the exit, only to have him ring the door-bell five minutes later with some new machination.

Near the end of the movie, a newly-introduced character asks Stallone if he knows Anthony. "Know him?!" Stallone cries in exasperation. "Sometimes I think I don't know anybody but him!"

If Stallone didn't mumble that line incomprehensibly, it would kill.

Anyway, that's how the US Government must be starting to feel about Nick Berg.

Nick Kronos does some bona-fide internet research and discovers that the radio company that just successfully sued the FCC to undo relaxed media-conglomeration rules seems to be the same radio company owned by... Nick Berg and/or his America-hating ANSWER-member father Michael Berg.

Weird, huh?

Not to hijack the thread, but the second post, the guy mentions he seems to be the only one who likes "Oscar"...that's nto true, I love that movie! it's lighthearted and funny.

Anyway, with this whole Nick Berg thing, his story and the stuff we are finding out about him seems to not match up at all. His being in Iraq at a time of war, was not smart to begin with. Something tells me that he was not there to just set up radio towers since he wasn't even hired to work for the company he said he was working for. I smell a rat.
