Commitment? Secret trial? Confiscation is a different process. All we are talking about is a red flag on an application to purchase a firearm.

Did you hear about the kid in Idaho that was arrested? He was going to beat his father to death with a pipe to get his father's guns. Remember Sandy Hook? The shooter killed his mother to get her AR.

You can take guns from crazy people hell-bent on harming as many people as they can but that does nothing at all to stop them. Red-flag laws will never prevent a mass killing; they only serve to disarm the ex-partners of angry women or people who might say something some antifa member doesn't like and so they use this to swat those they don't like.

In order to stop those who are a danger to themselves and/or others, you put them in a locked room, perhaps a room with padded walls, within a locked building, and you keep them there until qualified psychiatric professionals are thoroughly and honestly confident that they no longer represent a threat to themselves or others.

And even then you can't be sure but that's really the best you can do. Beyond that, all you can do is to make sure that as many potential victims as possible are armed to defend themselves.
