AYKM - Are You Kidding Me ? Pheeew!
Major League Baseball team New York Mets Have just given a 26 year old guy (Juan Soto) $765 Million to play for them on a 15 year contract. This is the most ever. That is more than 3/4 of a BILLION $$$$$$$$$$.

I'm sorry folks. But $765 Million for the UNKNOWN ? What if this guy gets a career ending injury, and is unable to play at all, after 2025 ? Or to play at a very reduced level ?

Even if he continues healthy through the next 15 years, at the same level he's playing at, that level, in now way, justifies $765 Million. Yikes!
At present, Soto has a career batting average of .285. That is mediocre.
Let's look at power - Extracting his 2020 season, when he had only 154 at bats, he has averaged 31 Home runs per year. Good, but not great. Not $765 Million great, that is.
Reliability - averaged 92 RBIs over 6 seasons. Again good, but nowhere near great.

Just to put just this in perspective

1. Ted Williams over his ENTIRE career earned (in 2025 $$$) the sum of $43 Million. That is about 1/18 of what Soto is getting just for 15 years (if he even plays that long)

In comparison of their first 6 years >>>

Soto batting avg - .285
Williams batt avg - .353

Soto Home Runs - 188
Williams Home Runs - 197

Soto RBIs - 555
Williams RBIs - 752

If this comparison were done with Stan Musial, Willie Mays, or Mickey Mantle, results would be about similar.

Juan Soto is a hot dog that is mostly bun and mustard. He's not the guy I would stake my franchise on. Ohtani yes, Soto no.

Juan Soto Retires From Professional Baseball To Play For The New York Mets

NEW YORK, NY — The sweepstakes to land free agent Juan Soto came to a surprising end, as the star outfielder decided to retire from professional baseball and play for the New York Mets instead.

Soto explained his decision to the press, noting that though playing professional baseball had been his lifelong dream, the opportunity to sign a 15-year contract for $765 million to enjoy a quiet retirement playing baseball recreationally for an amateur team like the Mets was too attractive to pass up.

"I can now live comfortably while playing inconsequential games no one will watch or care about," Soto explained. "I am grateful for the career I had, but playing for the Mets will be a lot more laid back than dealing with the intense pressure of playing for a professional team."

Soto's decision reportedly left baseball fans dejected, as they would now have to watch the Mets play if they wanted to catch a glimpse of Soto.

"It's heartbreaking to see a great player leave the major leagues at such a young age," said baseball fan Chad Gleiser. "It seemed like he had so much ahead of him. We all wish him all the best of luck in the future since it's unlikely that he'll ever be heard from again. He will be missed."

At publishing time, baseball analysts agreed that, despite the Mets not being a professional baseball team, they would still be heavily favored in any games against the Chicago White Sox.

Wow. I never even heard of the guy. And the average PhD only makes $140,000 /year with no guarantees.

Maybe we all should go into baseball.

Frankly, I don't even care for baseball and lost all interest in the game back around 1990 when they went on that strike.

The Mets wanted to get one over the Yankee's so they way overpaid but as I've noted before, it's why I no longer have any desire to go to a major league game any longer.

And he sure as hell never heard of you.

those were different times.....and the 1940's was pretty thin with baseball talent....

I lost interest when the Tampa Bay Rays traded away David Price & Ben Zobrist. Both went to be MVPS of the World Series with their new teams (Boston Red Sox & Chicago Cubs)

Rays are not a baseball team. They are a busine$$,

My dad took me to ballgames as a kid in the 1960s. I got to see some of the legends play live that today, people kill just to get a baseball card of. It was a great game back then, totally different from the game of today.

Last ballgame I went to see was actually a gift from my employer. They had a private box, and me and another guy who we worked together on a special project were given tickets to go use.

It was great, there was a whole table of great food and liqueur layed out in the room, then down front you could either sit and watch the game through a big window or you could go outside and sit on kind of a private balcony. You felt like you were right on the field, it was some of the best seats in the house.

I forget who played that night, it was one of the Legends like Sammy Sosa playing on one of the teams.

Sosa was a steroid player.
Legends of the 60's were Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron.

I wish the steroid players had never touched the stuff. Now they can't have any performance records. They probably would have been very good players without it.

Unless you really love a sport, it is better to be a frontrunner today. People are sports nuts though. You can be a bench warmer for 20 years in baseball and live with the finest things life has to offer for your whole life and family without any worry of going impoverished unless you are not too smart. Expensive to go to as a fan, yet people are doing it.

I have watched baseball for 74 years. I never heard of anything like that. Players like Mickey Mantle, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams probably never touched anything other than alchohol & cigarettes, and those things could have reduced their peformance, if anything.
