Livonia MI cops with some kind of grappling hook. Ended up pulling the rear axle off a car trying to escape. Fun to watch.

It ripped the whole damned rear axle off.

It ripped the whole damned rear axle off.
Hm. I wonder how that works.
I thought about that as well and concluded that the car manufacturers are working in cooperation with the police to make their cars compatible with the car capture design system.
As such, there should be a simple mod any car owner can do to defeat the ability to lock onto their rear axle.
Even better, with a little extra effort, one could make it that when the cop tries to grab your car, not only do you get away, but it leaves him attached to something which stops him from driving away further chasing after you.
But I still wonder how it actually works.
Giving it some thought, I think the video gives us some clues. Notice how he had to get right up on the car in front of him essentially tapping its bumper.
I believe they probably have an arm that extends out in front of the cop car with a camera on the end of it.
Driving up on the errant auto, the arm extends to look up under the bumper to see the carriage of the car.
AI runs a recognition program that identifies the type of car, front wheel or rear wheel, axle or not, control arms, etc., and selects the best grappling point.
AI then knows where to aim, how hard to fire and how far, and fires the grappling clamp which can hook onto and snap closed (spring driven) on the target item.
At that point, the full 30 feet of cable is released and the police got their man.
Any attempt to flee will, at best, eventually rip apart some essential part of your drivetrain you need to drive.
